Comedian Adam Carolla is a pretty solid car guy, having hosted the short-lived Car Show](http://www.autoblog.com/tag/the+car+show/) in 2011. Over the years, his interest has strayed towards vintage racers, particularly those campaigned by Hollywood legend Paul Newman. This admiration of Newman’s racing has led Carolla to begin work on a documentary of the actor-turned-racer and team owner.
“I decided somebody’s got to make a documentary about Paul Newman, the racecar driver with little to no acting involved, just racing. And I thought, ‘Well, why not the guy who has five of his cars? Okay, let’s do it.’ So I started doing a documentary on Paul Newman, the racecar driver.” Carolla told Racer](Adam Carolla making Paul Newman racing documentary | RACER).
It’s this focus on racing rather than acting that really makes the idea of a Newman biopic appealing. That’s not to say the *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid *and Cool Hand Luke star’s life isn’t ripe for a dedicated documentary, but that, especially later on, Newman was known for his love of racing, devoutly attending his team’s races.
As Racer is quick to point out, the timing of a Newman documentary seems right, with a documentary on actor Patrick Dempsey and Ron Howard’s Rush](http://www.autoblog.com/tag/rush/) both shining a Hollywood spotlight on the world of motorsports. From the sounds of it, Carolla already has a good plan in mind for the Newman piece.
It’s unclear if this story will come to fruition, but Carolla seems quite dedicated to it, and is hoping to start filming early in 2014.
