**Baghdad, Iraq, Oct. 29 (UPI) – A Baltimore public health expert says the Iraq war has killed more than 100,000 civilians, the Times of London reported Friday. **
Les Roberts of the Johns Hopkins University led a team of U.S. and British analysts in getting a death count. Their work will be published in the online edition of the British medical journal Lancet.
The Roberts estimate is strikingly higher than previous ones. A group of British academics called Iraq Bodycount, which compiles figures from witness accounts and media reports, put the number of civilian deaths at between 14,160 and 16,289.
Roberts did not consider civilian deaths in Fallujah, where two thirds of the violent deaths recorded have occurred.
His study contends the U.S.-led invasion has raised the risk of death to Iraqi civilians more than 2.5 times than before the invasion.
The risk was 1.5 times higher if mortality around the hotspot of Falluja was excluded. The lower figure equated to 98,000 deaths due to the conflict, his report concludes. Report: 100,000-plus Iraqi civilians dead

However, THIS is highly unusual: **Les Roberts, the lead researcher from Johns Hopkins, said the article’s timing was up to him. ** “I emailed it in on Sept. 30 under the condition that it came out before the election,” Roberts told The Asocciated Press.

Of the 988 households visited, 808, consisting of 7,868 people, agreed to participate in the survey. However, it’s possible that they may have zoned in on hotspots that might not be representative of the death toll across Iraq.”
4)"In an attempt at firmer confirmation, the interviewers asked for death certificates in 78 households and were provided them 63 times.
There were 46 deaths in the surveyed households before the war. After the invasion, there were 142 deaths. That is an increase from 5 deaths per 1,000 people per year to 12.3 per 1,000 people per year — more than double."
To extrapolate 100,000 deaths from a survey that found 142 actual deaths is a HUGE extrapolation.
Unlike Kosovo, the interviewees were asked to attribute the source of the deaths. This is very unusual, and respondents may have been intimidated from telling the truth by insurgents who would slit thier throats after the interviewers left.
6)"However, more than a third of the post-invasion deaths were reported in one cluster of households in the city Falluja, where fighting has been most intense recently. Because the fighting was so severe there, the numbers from that location may have exaggerated the overall picture.
When the researchers recalculated the effect of the war without the statistics from Falluja, the deaths end up at 7.9 per 1,000 people per year — still 1.5 times higher than before the war. "
On a serious note I do not think the Americans even killed 142 civilians. That has got to be a lie. How can such precision bombing result in 142 careless deaths.

on a serious note, statistical estimates of data are usually valid within a margin of error. especially in cases where you can actually go on the ground to ensure you have a valid sample, as this one is. as opposed to the democide data which was entirely based on historical figures from questionable sources.
there is probably a 95 or 97 percent surety that this estimate is infact correct. even if we take the maximum of the margin of error, you still have a very large number. you're clinging onto a very small probability if you're assuming that these figures completely misrepresent reality. under the current circumstances, when the americans dont do body counts, this IS infact the best figure we have to go on.
unless you have specific objections about the scientific method of this research instead of protestations about political motivation, shut your trap and face reality.

assuming the sample is fair ofcourse. show me any proof that that is not the case. otherwise the least you can do is demonstrate some degree of outrage at the amount of damage you've wreaked in that part of the world.
Even at a margin of error around the 30% mark, (which by the way is super generous), the figure would be around the 70,000 mark. Not to difficult to work out, unless your name is Ohioguy and Antiobl. In that case the figure would be around 7!
If the Iraqi figures are so far off, then we need to use the same method when measuring the 9/11 deaths.
