Repentance in Islam.

Is the concept of “Taubah”, repentance , somehow, associated with one’s ability, competence, to perform that “sin” against which one is repenting; would repentance of a paralyzed thief be accepted?

Please share.

Re: Repentance in Islam.

tawba is something between Allah and the person....
nothing certain that we can say i guess....

the only time when tawba is not accepted is when the person is sure about his death....

Re: Repentance in Islam.

tauba means if u do something wrong u ask for forgivness by saying tuaba :)

May we find parallels in "death", which leaves one incompetent to do any sin, and "paralysis" that may inflict an incompetence to steal.

Re: Repentance in Islam.

Tauba has two components.

1- Being ashamed for what someone did.

2- Being determined not to do the bad deed again.

I think even if someone is paralysed..being seriously ashamed of commiting a 'sin' like theft may be considered a reason for getting in to good book.

Perhaps returning the stolen goods, accepting the consequences like jail time and helping people not to commit the sin (or theft) will add to his benefit.

When someone is sure that person is going to die in a short time (I am not sure how short) then still its up to Allah/God...but most people will tell you that person will not get pardoned.

Stealing was just an example, thousands can be cited, However having said that, I do agree with, and understand your point. Allah being omniscient knows "will" behind the "good will", and Allah's decisions are not a reflection of the intention but the endurance of the one who is intending.

One of the most beautiful hadith on repentance I'd love to share =)

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (RA) reported: Prophet of Allah (SAW) said, "There was a man from among a nation before you who had killed ninety-nine people and then made an inquiry about the most learned people on the earth. He was directed to a monk. He came to him and told him that he had killed ninety-nine people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the negative and the man killed him also completing one hundred.

He then asked about the most learned man in the earth. He was directed to a scholar. He told him that he had killed one hundred people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the affirmative and asked, 'Who stands between you and repentance? Go to such and such land; there (you will find) people devoted to prayer and worship of Allah, join them in worship, and do not come back to your land because it is an evil place.'

So he went away and hardly had he covered half the distance when death overtook him; and there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of torment. The angels of mercy pleaded, 'This man has come with a repenting heart to Allah,' and the angels of punishment argued, 'He never did a virtuous deed in his life.' Then there appeared another angel in the form of a human being and the contending angels agreed to make him arbiter between them.

He said, 'Measure the distance between the two lands. He will be considered belonging to the land to which he is nearer.' They measured and found him closer to the land (land of piety) where he intended to go, and so the angels of mercy collected his soul."

[Al Bukhari & Muslim]

Commentary:
1. One comes to know from this Hadith that the gate of Taubah is open even for the worst of the sinners; and Allah forgives everyone provided he repents sincerely.
2. It is the duty of a religious scholar that while discussing a problem. he should keep in mind the psychological aspects of the questioner and adopt a policy which neither causes a change in the Injunction of Allah nor make the sinner reckless in his sins out of frustration.
3. When a situation warrants, angels appear in the form of men on Orders of Allah.

:salam:

Br or Sr (Sorry don’t know). Taubah is the acknowledgement of doing something that Allah SWT has forbidden. So what we are asking forgiveness for is disobeying Allah SWT when we were aware that we were.

To lack the ability or competence to indulge in that sin, will only, act as a deterrent for you. To still have the ability or competence to indulge in a sin does not mean you necessarily will do it, even if you thought about it.

Your example of becoming paralyzed or say in a vegetative state or maybe brain dead, is a compelling reason why we should never delay our Taubah for sins we commit knowingly or unknowingly, for someday we loose the ability to even recall what we have done or realize it.

Taubah is not accepted once the death rattle reaches ones throat. Its not because the person looses the ability to sin again (well that too) but because things unseen probably become apparent, which in this world, have acted as a deterrent for us from commiting sins. For instance, people who deny the existence of Allah SWT and unseen things, witness those things and it becomes apparent to them, they could not possibly deny it thereafter.
