There should be a statute of limitation on stupidity. It is such an embarrasment to refer to it as Gaddafi Stadium.
It was bad enough that the stadium was named after a world paraiah in the first place. And now that we know that in recent times, Libyan dictator has practically sold off Pakistan (and actually shipped parts of their still-born nuclear plant to the US), is there any good reason left to keep our premier cricket stadium named after that mouse of a moron?
Not to mention that the stadium is virtually re-built after the latest multi-million dollar renovations and is practically unrecognizable from the 1970’s when it was originally named thus.
Surely we did not promise him a perpetual naming rights. Can’t the authorities change the name to some thing more appropriate? Lahore Cricket Stadium is hardly inspiring. May be have some kind of naming competition to come up with a better name.
Regardless of when it was named, it is very weird that a cricket stadium would be named after a foreign leader, and the leader being that of Libya of all places.
Very weird indeed. I want to know why it was named "Gaddafi stadium" in the first place? Did Gaddafi came in for a visit and the government got inspired and named a stadium after him? Did he pay for the construction costs and hence won naming rights? As far as I know, Gaddafi hasn't done a thing for Pakistan. We should definitely rename the stadium.
As for the new name, Musharraf Stadium sounds as good a name as any.

Agreed. Let's rename our premier cricket stadia after the two stalwarts of our cricket in the late 70s and 80s

The ground was originally named “Lahore Stadium”, but was renamed in 1974 in honour of Colonel Gaddafi of Libya after a rousing speech he gave at a Organisation of the Islamic Conference meeting in favour of Pakistan’s right to pursue nuclear weapons.
And where is that statue erected? Perhaps in the bay in Karachi so as to remind all that sail into the harbor of the limitations imposed on their personal rights and liberty?
So I was wrong… he did do something for Pakistan. Although he was the first one to rat out on Pakistan a few years ago implicating us in the nuclear smuggling scandal.
although I do agree in principle that it should be renamed we have more than enough Pakistani heroes needing recognition !
In that case let us demolish it and make a park there and then we can build a new stadium somewhere else and name it whatever we want to name it but we should be careful to name it keeping in mind that geo political realities can change even after 100 years. Look at China , Mao Tse Tung used to be a father figure there and now there is no mention of his name during Olympics in new China.
The only hero I remember from Lahore is Zubair urf Jhaara pehelwan. i think we should rename it to Jhaara da UkhaaRRaa...sounds like the Roman gladiator ring.
