Removable USB harddrives

look pretty neat and efficient…

I am thinking of getting one
what are the cons…I mean do they work with all the Windows versions…and what abt Linux???

I have used a pen-shaped 128MB USB Flash memory. It is pretty amazing. Very fast and convenient. We use it to transfer huge files easily from one computer to another where we don't create a network.

The only thing is, its best if you have USB port easily accessible (like front of the computer or laptop). Secondly, in Windows ME/2K etc, you have to make sure to click on "Remove Hardware" icon in the task bar before taking the device out. Otherwise computer mind karr jaata hai.

No idea about Linux.

^ Make sure its USB 2.0 compatible; otherwise it will slow your system’s performance down to almost zero. In some cases it could freeze your system for several minutes. USB 2.0 gives you the flexibility of faster data transfer rate over conventional USB 1.1. If you really wanna enjoy having a USB drive then my advice would be not only you look for USB 2.0 but also buffer size of at least 8MB.

Keep in mind that there is difference between USB Hard drive and USB Flash Drive.

Oops. My bad. :-o

^ You are not, its just a matter that you are referring to another type of drive which looks something similar to this...

whats the difference between a flash drive and a USB harddrive

Yeah. I was talking about the pen-shaped removable USB Flash drives. On second reading of the post, I am still not sure if he is asking about external USB harddrives (which can be 50-60-100 GB) or these small pen-shaped USB Flash drives which are usually from 8 MB to 1 GB.

yeah its the flash drive i am talkin abt...the ones which go from 8MB to 1 GB

Well, if you are talking about flash drives, then my original post was relevant. Yipee!! :)

By the way, I have used it with USB 1.1 on Win 2K and Me computers and it has never given me any problems. No freezing, no slowing down. Just seamless sharing of data. As soon as you put it in, the computer recognizes it, and displays it as a "Removable Harddisk" on Windows Explorer.

oh ok...thanks a lot Faisal and Salman
