Remote Desktop into a computer with Dual Monitors

So here is the big issue that is so annoying…

I have dual LCD monitors at work and its great to work with them. I recently got the second one by the way so I am new with this. Yesterday, I had a Virtual Machine window on the second monitor. I use that VM for some development work. I wasn’t finished with development when I left from work yesterday and I was planning to do it last night from home and wrap it up.

I often use remote desktop from home and telecommute frequently. I only have one monitor at home. I remote desktop’d to the work computer and the VM window that was on the second monitor didn’t show up. It was in the task bar but it just wouldn’t show up on the screen. I tried everything. I minimzed, maximized, tried “switch to” from task manager. I couldn’t just kill the window because its a VM. I would lose alot of work by doing that and probably corrupt the VM too. This was very frustrating and needless to say I couldn’t do the work I planned to do.

I tried googling around for the issue with no luck. Has anyone seen this behavior? Its not just the VM window. Its basically any window that I have on the second monitor, I can’t get to it from remote desktop. I usually kill the window and restart it. I just can’t do that with a VM.

Re: Remote Desktop into a computer with Dual Monitors

First thing I would look at is this, depending on your video card and the setup, you need to switch the desktop to one screen in the DISPLAY properties then it would show up. You need to tell the computer that you are on one monitor as opposed to TWO... so when it wouldn't show up even though you saw it there, it was coming up on the OTHER screen that you programmed the PC to use.

Re: Remote Desktop into a computer with Dual Monitors

^ You cannot change the resolution of the computer you remote desktop into.

Re: Remote Desktop into a computer with Dual Monitors

You can't but you can change the screen settings in the SETTINGS tab.

Re: Remote Desktop into a computer with Dual Monitors

The only way to do is - turn off multi or dual monitor option in ur Desktop settings, reboot the machine & then start again. If it doesnt work then I cannot think of any other option.

I had this issue & I did what I mentioned above & it got resolved. But then I made sure that I am not openning that window in the other screen, to save myself from this trouble.

Re: Remote Desktop into a computer with Dual Monitors

Rebooting is unnecessary. I said I can kill the misplaced window and that resolves it too. I want to get to the window without having to kill the window or reboot the machine.

I sent an email to co-workers here and I got a response from someone that I think will resolve the issue. I though I would share it so here it is...

If you ever “lose” a window on a different monitor, you need to move it back to the primary monitor’s desktop. To do this, follow the steps below. Note, you need to know (or guess correctly) where the “lost” window is located relative to the primary desktop.
1.Select the window (application) via the Task Bar, ALT-TAB, etc.; you do not need to see the window for this to work.
2.Type ALT-SPACE-M.
3.Use (hold down) the cursor keys to move the window toward the primary desktop. For example, if your secondary monitor’s desktop appears to the right of your main monitor, hold down the LEFT arrow key until the window appears on the primary desktop.
Learn the technique with windows which are still visible, and you’ll be able to recover “misplaced” windows without needing to see them.
