Remember Shakti?

“remember shakti” event is taking place on the first of october, at chicago theater. here is some info on that event.

In 1975 guitar legend John McLaughlin and Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain formed the quartet Shakti – the first group to capture the world music fusion sound. Shakti is a Sanskrit word meaning creative intelligence, beauty and power. Decades later, they return as Remember Shakti, with McLaughlin and Hussain joining with U. Shrinivas (Mandolin) and V. Selvaganesh (Ghatam, Kanjira, Mridangam). Remember Shakti’s music combines elements from Western Jazz with Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (south Indian) classical music for an innovative and exciting sound.

I've been to only one Zakir Hussain concert (unfortunately) but I was mesmerised!

i have seen zakir hussein before too, and he was fantastic, I think this fusion stuff is great. Mclaughlin is an amazing guitar player and to see them play live would be something else.

speaking of fusion, check out Fareeq Haque, a chicago based jazz guitarist..his work mixes jazz, desi music and latin music as well, i believe his mother is from costa rica.

Just a reminder for anyone who wants to attend, its this week 10/1/03
and then to other cities
