Anyone have any updates on this movie?
I saw this Mira Nair interview
It sounds like it was in pre production stage, any updates?
I liked the book a lot and hope they film in Lahore.

never heard of this movie…but mira is a good director so hope it will be good.
Re: Reluctant Fundamentalist -- The Movie
it is going to be a REALLY dumb movie. They will shoot this in india, with indian actors playing pakistanis. When I first heard about ms. Nair buying rights to this a few years ago, I IMMEDIATELY knew it was going to be an absurd effort, shot in india.
The thing about shooting stuff in india, you have to deal with indian movie industry. It tends to get tainted, and the free and independent spirit takes a backseat. You have to do things their way, or your projects are sabotaged. This film is going to suck. The acting will be horrible. I just KNOW it.
edit: plus here's how i know: I wrote the original script converting the book into a 120 minute film, and then wrote the second verison of it. Mira's office actually opted out of the original story of the novel, and wanted to make it a love story. It's been two years and i've had no further involvement with her company, but they brought in idiot "writers" from bollywood (people who don't have a clue to the aesthetics of writing proper film scripts, and people who make movies as they shoot!). Chances are, that this will be an bolly/lolly style musical. Achaar daalain gay woh log, sadly.

O what a waste!! And pls MIra Nair is sooo over rated. She actually stole Sohail Sahib's old song for her movie Monsoon wedding , without ever giving him any credit for that beautiful song sung on Shabnam & Nadeem ( cant remembr any names rite now, 2 in t/ morning!!) XCept Mississippi Masaalaa, everything is soo overrated and aftr DR Lulwrth's acct. I'm even more dissapointed!
Re: Reluctant Fundamentalist – The Movie
I don’t know if its a bollywood movie. I created the thread here because the book was about a Paksitani and the writer is also Pakistani.

Dr. L: Thanks for the insights. If this is indeed the case, then I am really disappointed. In that youtube interview she mentioned filming Lahore, but I guess that was all conjecture. I mean the movie could be amazing, done as dark Independent film.
Wow, you seem to be well connected. RF could have been made in the US, as you know, more than half the scenes are based in the States. Do you know why Hamid sold the rights to Nair? Was it because she was the highest bidder? they wanted to collaborate?
Ugh, Reluctant Fundamentalist is anything BUT a cheesy love story -- its a deep, dark that touches upon politics, identity and society.

Same here! I mean I don't really know about Mira Nair, however I really enjoyed the book and was hoping to see it on film.

I haven't had contact with Mohsin directly, just spoke to him on a phone once or twice. I've been in touch with his agent who I approached for the script initially, and who then connected me to mira's office.
Mira seems to be a fan of Mohsin and was the first buyer of rights of his novel. I don't know anything else besides that. And yes, they plan to take out the the female character who commits suicide from the movie. They wanted to keep her alive for love interest purposes...which is complete BULL****. it serves NO purpose and I was so angry when i found out. ughh.
