Relocating to Dubal - Help Needed!

Hello Guys,

I love this forum and it has been very helpful to me as I am a regular viewer. I am here for some help as well
I have got a job in Dubai and will be relocating after Eid inshAllah. I have a lot of questions !
As I will be moving alone and for the first time, what should I include in my luggage? Since Winters are approaching, what sort of material should I choose for buying clothes?
What should I go for more apart from long shirts that I am planning to get stitched..? Do long skirts work there? More ideas and even pictures are welcome.

What else should be carried like in cosmetics, cutlery etc? I know everything is available there, however sometimes people carry some things from Pakistan that are expensive there.

Also, how much cash can I carry as I will be travelling all alone and for the first time to Dubai.

Lastly, my office will be at Business Bay so is there any way that I will be able to find a 1BHK apartment or single room with attached bathroom and kitchen in reasonable price?

I want anything, any sort of information that will be helpful for me in this regard.
I know these are a lot of questions but everyone can answer s much as they can

Re: Relocating to Dubal - Help Needed!

I can't tell you anything about luggage and cosmetics. :)

But having lived in Dubai for 4 years myself I can give you some guidance on places to live. Do you currently have a Driving License? If yes, from which country is it? I'm asking because even though there is the Metro in Dubai now, it's still much easier to get around by car. If you are moving from Pakistan you will have to do all the driving classes and a driving test, which is really hard in Dubai. So it can take quite some time until you finally have a license. If you are moving from a Western country, you can get your driving license converted without any classes or tests. That's what I did. :)

A relatively nice place to live, that is not extremely expensive and is also well connected to Business Bay is Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT). The good thing about that would be, that you could take the Metro from JLT to Business Bay. The construction quality in JLT is not world class, but it's ok. You will probably be living on rent anyway. Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence are very popular areas too, but they are also more expensive.

I used to live in the Arabian Ranches and in Discovery Gardens. Both are awesome places, but more catered towards families. And you could not live there without a car. So they will probably not be suitable for you.

I would not recommend to get a place in Bur Dubai or Deira (ie the older parts of the city). These areas are much cheaper to live in than the ones I mentioned earlier, but are very crowded and as a single girl you will not be very comfortable there. 90% of the people who live there are single men (or married men who have left their families in their home countries).

Hope that helps.

Re: Relocating to Dubal - Help Needed!

Thank you very much on the info. I will be shifting from Pakistan and I have been driving here for around 11 years now and have a Pakistani license. I read on some blogs about getting a driving license there is hard and one has to go through driving lessons. Are they too difficult? I heard they note small things such as the driving not seeing in the side mirrors etc? Anyhow I think initially I would not be able to get a license or drive around but inshAllah if I settle there quite well, then I might be able to.

Your info regarding the locations is quite helpful. Daily, I look at the websites with rental property listings but was not sure which ones would be suitable.

Also I wanted to ask, how safe is Dubai for single women? Especially the ones relocating from Pakistan? I have heard that Dubai is a crime free state, however, I am a bit reluctant thinking about living alone.

Re: Relocating to Dubal - Help Needed!

Unfortunately a Pakistani driving license won't really help as the RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) in Dubai does not accept driving licenses from Pakistan and India. Therefore you will have to do the whole training and the test once you decide you are ready for it. What you heard about the driving test is true. They are extremely difficult to pass. I have known people who failed the test more than 10 times, but the most common ratio is that people pass on the 3rd or 4th attempt.

In your situation a 1 Bedroom or Studio in JLT will be most suitable then. That whole JLT area is quite big so try to make sure that the building is as close to the Metro station as possible.

No place in the world is completely crime-free. But compared to pretty much every other place in the region Dubai is a very safe place. Crime rates are very low. But they are not Zero. There are a lot of single women living in Dubai, not so many from Pakistan though. You should be ok as long as you avoid certain areas. Not so much from a safety point of view but for your own comfort.

Can you point out those areas? Also, if we fail to get the license on the first attempt, do we have to pay the same amount again? The license fee?

Re: Relocating to Dubal - Help Needed!

In terms of dresses, feel free to wear shalwar kameez. Most of the women from Pakistan wear it even in professional settings, and in many cases (experience talking) people will guess if you're Pakistani or Indian based on if you're wearing the Pakistani style shalwar kameez or not. Otherwise, you can wear whatever else you're comfortable in. I will however highly recomment to dress appropriate, not only because of the whole Islamic culture, but also to protect yourself from leering gazes, which are very very common here. Winter isn't really winter here, especially last year. Couple of shawls and some sweaters (not too heavy) will do mostly.

If your employer can house you in a hotel apartment for at least a month or so, it will really help you. There are some really nice ones in the Greens area. You can use that time to find yourself a place to live, as well as pass your driving's test and buy a car. Meanwhile, if you can get a number of a private taxi from your co-workers or an aquaintance to get around. Cabs can be found easily nowadays, but just in case a number helps.

As for what stuff you need, everything is here. From tawas to pressure cookers to comforters etc. Bring your essentials, the things you'll need for a month or so. Or things you're really attached to like a kambal. Once you look around Carrefour or Lulu, you'd be able to find whatever you need. However in my opinion the really really nice stuff (bed sheets, curtains etc) are found in Pakistan. As for cosmetics that's up to you. You can splurge here and find all sorts of brands and products or bring your own stuff. I personally find cosmetics a bit expensive.

Carry cash. Taxi drivers for example will take cash only, and some small stores will also take cash. Open a bank account here as soon as possible once you have your documents, and then use the debit card or credit card, whatever you're used to using.

I would also recommend browsing dubaifaqs.com to find quick info about almost every topic possible.

Hi Samias ,

Firstly Dubai is very much a desi culture, so you wont find it a challenge to adapt to the general lifestyle. Usually people settle down within the first month.
Winters in the Emirates arent very cold. usually a cardigan does the task. Only during December evenings you might feel the chill but winter is not really winter in Emirates as compared to what you see in Pakistan.

Regards clothing, you get everything from desi clothes to western clothes in shops. if you decide to shop in the malls you will find everything expensive .. if you make a day's trip to sharjah or ajman and go to smaller shops you will save tonns of money. Depends what your shopping style is. There is so much variety in the market and you will always manage to find some super brilliant cheap deals , so dont bring alot of stuff with you.

Getting a license is a hassle. its an expensive process. as a short cut, enroll yourself for an automatic car license rather then the manual one, anyways cars are mostly automatic gear in Dubai. ( you cant drive a manual car on an automatic car license) automatic car licenses are much easier to obtain.

first day at work, ask colleagues if any of them have a car share scheme. Most indians and desi's do car share schemes with each other, saving them taxi costs and general transport costs , by the way the public bus is worth exploring too if the stop isnt too far away from your flat, that you rent. Cars have become more expensive due to Saalik taxes , so you have to keep that in mind as well.

Initially you might have to look for an apartment or ask your employer for help on this , normally they provide the intial help. But eventually if you want to look for a cheaper place , talk to colleagues , Indians usually have a very strong sharing sense when it comes to renting, so talk to them. Put an advert in classified as well and you will get gazillion calls for shared accomodation.

If you want to live on your own and save some money , the Al khan area between sharjah and Dubai is not as expensive as Dubai .. it may take you about 30 minutes to get into work daily but will give you a peaceful access to both sharjah and dubai.

Good luck with your move

30 minutes from Al Khan to Dubai? Impossible during rush hour. It's close to an hour if you are lucky.
