ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani Sunni militant leader and member of parliament Azam Tariq was among five people killed in an attack on his car Monday on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad, police and party officials said.

“Yes, it was Maulana Azam Tariq,” said a sobbing Rashid Mehmood Faruqi, Tariq’s personal secretary and a fellow member of his militant Sunni Muslim group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, or SSP.

“The others were his driver and colleagues.”

Party workers were also in tears at the Islamabad hospital where Tariq’s body was taken, and said they had seen the body of their leader. They said Tariq’s bodyguards were among the dead.

Inspector General of Police Mohammad Akram also confirmed Tariq’s death. “I had my doubts initially, but three or four respectable people who knew him have identified the body,” he told reporters at the hospital.

Akram said three gunmen opened fire on the vehicle at a toll station on the main highway to Pakistani Kashmir, killing all five of its occupants.

Just wanted to let you guys know. Shias are not the only ones being killed around. Sunnis are also getting killed.

I hope the moderators will close the thread if it derails to Shia-Sunni mud slinging.

same topic is being discussed in Pak affairs, maybe this needs to be merged with that. grazzie

True except for one issue. The vast majority of Shias being gunned downed are not militants. They are doctors, police, funeral mourners, etc.

This guy is the one who promoted, in fact led, the ideology that it's halal and a good deed to murder Shias.

Whilst I would have preferred to see him executed as a result of a fair trial, his deeds and actions were well known and quite frankly he received his just deserts in the absence of a court competent enough to try him.

He encouraged people to kill their brother Muslims despite their posing no threat in any way, shape or form - I have no sympathy for one any who does such deeds.
