Religion

I wonder what purpose religion actually serves. As far as what I have witnessed it has only churned out fanatics and occupied our minds with unnecessary BS. Oh how much time people waste fretting over religious pointers even in day to day life, it’s just amazing.

Humans have obsessed with it beyond the limits of sanity, killing innocent people, waging wars, spreading terrorism ( and this is about no religion in particular but at the same time all religions out there).

What good does religion actually do? Is it so hard for us to act morally in absence of the fear of burning in hell? Won’t we help a hurt puppy if the mirage of heaven didn’t exist? The moral development occurs only because we think someone is watching us? Isn’t it funny how major acts of terrorism everywhere have been carried out in the name of religion, so much for loving thy neighbor!

Re: Religion

Theres many who hold that point of view about religion. maybe even me, though i'd rather blame the religious hardliners than the religion itself.

i feel it's not really religion that's to blame. im not a great believer in it myself, but ive seen people around me, who inspite of being religious, lead tolerant, non interfering, non judgemental lives and they're happy - maybe their religion is a source of fulfillment to them. my point is, if religion or something similar shows you a way to lead your life without making you look down upon those who do not follow the same path - it's all good. to each his own. the problem starts when religion becomes much more than just a way of life but a way to spread hate.

i feel it's not about one religion vs another.

more like fundamentalists vs the liberals.

or the fanatics vs the tolerant.

Re: Religion

its the mis-interpretation of relegion tht has led to this............
relegion civilized us.............it taught us ethics...& morals.........but alas... now we don't truly follow relegion........& in turn blame it for the misfortunes we created ourselves...............
& well there r ppl who don't act morally even now...relegion or no telegion............

Re: Religion

It's not simply misinterpretation, it's actual abuse. People use religion to justify their immoral behavior, they manipulate it to manipulate others. It is not religion that is the problem, but human nature.

Re: Religion

yea u r right abt tht...........

Anwar Qureshi:

I have a feeble mind, please step forward and help me understand in 'your own words' how you have contributed to the discussing by posting (even in multimedia) ayah's from Quran. I am not being sarcastic, I just want to understand how these aya's relate to the actual question posted in this thread.

I have seen this numerous times, and I am beginning to believe many people are quite paste-happy and post Quranic ayya's just for the sake of it, for one of the two reasons:

(a) to hide behind Quranic Ayahs, that after you post them, disagreeing with you would be like disagreeing with Allah

(b) Or sometimes as a self-righteous 'decoration' of the discussion, without caring about how relevant or meaningful they might be in the context of a given a discussion, just to gain the satisfaction that you have done your part by injecting Allah's message in a discussion among misguided people. As I suspect is the case in this thread.

I don't think the original poster is questioning the existence of the Almighty, nor is he/she comparing religions or even objecting to the message of a particular religion. To me it seemed that he/she was questioning the need and effects of religion on contemporary society. Would love to know the explanation of these aya's in this context.

Re: Religion

You clearly have no idea of the vicious acts of terrorism carried out across the world for almost a whole century by Marxist-Leninist and Communist terrorists who flatly deny the existence of God.

Secular, non-religious groups like the Abu Nidal Organisation carried out the Rome and Vienna Airport Attacks in December 1985, the Neve Shalom synagogue attack in Istanbul and the Pan Am Flight 73 hijacking in Karachi in September 1986, and the City of Poros day-excursion ship attack in Greece in July 1988.

The ETA terrorist organisation had no religious motivation; and the Tamil Tigers do not carry out terrorist attacks for religious reasons either.

November 17 was a secular Marxist group responsible for over a quarter of a century of bombings across Greece . The Red Army Faction was a communist terrorist group active in Germany for 30 years, shooting and bombing innocents.

The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is another secular, Marxist terrorist group still active today, in Turkey.

Re: Religion

I might be taking the discussion a bit off topic here, but I'd like to remind you that two wrongs don't make a right. When we say that 'but athiests do it too," that doesn't absolve religious people of the horror being commited in the name of their respective religions. Unlike the ideologies and movments you have mentioned, religions have been greater sanctuaries for terrorism and general bloodshed. Religious people have a difficult time accepting that some among them are just 'criminals' despite how much love and devotion they show toward their faith.

It is the responsibility of the followers of each religion to not let criminals of humanity seek refuge in their respective religions. A lot of blood has been shed in the name of God, and every major religion has blood on its hand. A religion is as its followers do. All Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and followers of other religions must make sure that they categorically oppose acts of terrorism. To say but/if/why and finding justifications or reasons from history shows a lack of will to stop these acts.

Now as Pakistanis, and Muslims (I am both), we must realize that some among us are criminals. It's not a far fetched thought, we do have thieves, murderes, thugs in our societies, don't we? We don't show any sympathy for those criminals just because they claim to follow the same religion as we do. We should treat the terrorists the same way too, i.e., criminals of humanity. And this includes people who engage in violent vigilantism against other civilians and states, as well as people who teach hatred and intolerance by projecting a victim mentality. We have got some running around on this board too!

Re: Religion

religion provides the masses with something abstract to believe in.
a reason to behave in a certain way.
an excuse almost.
