Religion teaches morality

Re: Religion teaches morality

that summarises the discussion for me :k:

Re: Religion teaches morality

Are the two mutually exclusive?

Re: Religion teaches morality

may be morality is a relitive term, i believe it is not. However, to deal with this issue i started the discussion with an example agreed upon by all of you guys.

Re: Religion teaches morality

That is how you guys believe. Today people act morally because religion taught the morallty. So religious and non-religious people act morally because they had been part of the same societies, they interacted each other and learnt from each other. I dont know why it is so hard for some muslim brothers to digest/swallow it, it is a credit to religion instead. Ok, just tell me from where the Idea of morallty came to us?
Again, the thing like morality you know today, religion braught to us. There is no other even a candidate. Let me explain it in a while.

Re: Religion teaches morality

  1. Morallity is possible with religion as it teaches. (established true)
  2. Morallity is possible only with religion (yet to be established true) now we will modify '2' by supporting or refuting with the data we have.
  3. '1' implies that religion is a candidate for bringing the idea of morality to humanity.
  4. Do we have any other candidate? NO. That implies '2', religion is the only candidate for bringing the idea of morality. Any of you guys want to proceed further, must deal with '4' and prove any other candidate exists.

Re: Religion teaches morality

As stated multiple times

1) morality is possible with religion
2) Immorality is possible with religion
3) morality is possible without religion
4) immorality is possible without religion

Each of these is equally true "established"

Thank you.

Re: Religion teaches morality

Does this sentence mean that before arrivals of Arabs in 8th century, sub-continent (which include Indus Valley Civilisation) was an immoral society?

Re: Religion teaches morality

^i didnt imply that. this world has been receiving divine revelations. Can you claim that no Prophet came to this part of the world?

Re: Religion teaches morality

Before this "debate" can proceed, we need a consensus on what morality means. You gave some examples of morality that most will agree with. However, there can be issues you consider moral that others don't and vice versa.

You keep bringing up the importance of data. But you have not responded to issues re homosexuals where our definitions of morality may diverge. So kindly allow me to rephrase my earlier questions - this time making it general

1) is equating homosexuals with animals moral behavior?
2) is it moral to refuse to host an old friend simply because he is now gay?

This is a start. There are infinite situations where one person's interpretation of morality would differ from another's.

This thread should last decades and still I don't expect consensus on what is morality. Look forward to your answers.

Re: Religion teaches morality

So this is your agenda. This thread should be in Religion forum and titled Islam is pre requisite to morality. You wont get any argument from me in that case. Because that would be matter of faith.

Re: Religion teaches morality

Southie is an obvious troller and non-serious guy, i dont to continue discussion with him.
Anyone else can bring example of morality of his/her own choice, I will reply.

Re: Religion teaches morality

Listen pal. I may be an "obvious troller" for you. But as long as this thread is open, I will continue to post my opinion. And will continue to post examples of how different people have different views on what morality means.

Just because my questions make you uncomfortable, don't expect me to stop asking them.

Since you have started this unwarranted name calling, let m state my opinion. The very premise of this thread is immoral. (The implication that one has to be religious to be moral. Thus athiests are immoral. )

Open up your closed mind and start with being humble wrt your fellow human beings - whether they are homosexuals or athiests.

You are entitled to your opinion re who is a troller and who isn't. And I am entitled to my opinion on who I consider a good and moral human being and who I don't. Those who espouse views on other humans as you have - I consider them immoral ( just in that aspect). And any religion that teaches folks to insult fellow human being based on orientation - I consider that aspect of the religion immoral.

If you open a controversial thread, don't start calling folks trolls who put up legitimate arguments.

Re: Religion teaches morality

Anyway, if I am not welcome in this thread, I respect that. It is your thread. As Tulsi Das said

Aawath hi harshe nahi
Nainan nahin saneh
Tulsi Taha na jaaiyo
Kanchan barse megh.

And I leave you with this song. Learn from it.

Re: Religion teaches morality

China should be the most immoral country of all, if religion is pre-req for morality.

Re: Religion teaches morality

Ok, some guys are trying to make the point ambiguous. If you have problem with the examples i gave, let’s disregard all the examples and** prove rationally, why one would act morally?**

If you don’t want to respond rationally, your points may be ok (right or wrong) emotionally, but not true philosophically.
