People have killed each other on the basis of religion
A friend goes to war in Afghanistan with the Spanish army. Do you have a few words to say to him?
It’s hard to say anything. I think it’s something so incredible when you go to war! Just the fact “I go to war,” seems inconceivable. Virtually all the bad things that happen in life are the fault of radicalism of any kind, that trigger problems that could be avoided. You can have hobbies, likes, beliefs, but always with respect for the opinions of others, without fail. Just as with religion. One can be religious, atheist, Christian, Muslim, whatever, but all the atrocities that have been caused by religion are too much. For me religion is the biggest killer in history.
What would your ideal world be?
I do not think that an ideal world is possible. We can hope for a much better world than we live in, not for me, I am lucky that I have almost the ideal life, but for many other people.

Do you have an idea of what would change?
Always we speak of the poverty, but, for example, I have been in India, in Chennai, several times, and I can assure you that inside the poverty I see happiness in the faces of the people. And that we should apply to all of us. There, where people have practically nothing and live in the street, you see the faces and they do not deceive you. Here, many people have practically everything and tomorrow you can see them going to work and their faces do not reflect happiness. . . Here we do not value what we have; I’m like this, too.

I was thinking to open a thread on this topic in History Forums.
My personal view: All religions preach peace and humanity. Its the fundamental approach of bigot followers of those religions that lead to war. Talking of Islam, I know the basic teaching that if if you kill one human, you kill all the humanity. History of Islam in Prophet's period is proof that Muslims always retaliated against a move (be it Badr, Uhad, Khaibar) Muslims didn't wage war on others.
Quran teaches us harmony with ahl e kitab (chrisitians and jews - the major religions of Arab at Prophet's time).

Catskin its a general perception nowadays to label religion root of all the problems. Here is the link of the article, where it is said that each party (here Bush & Saddam) considering itself on right path motivate their ppl to fight by saying that God is with them.
We all know its not the religion that was behind this war.

This is the main reason religion and government should not be mixed, IMHO. (Am kinder and gentler now, so no heated debates from yours truly on this topic)

But when we look at initial period of Muslim History, we see until the government remained with righteous/religious people, it benefited the masses because they were following the guidance/teachings properly while dealing with the people.

^ yes Muqawwee, I learnt after visiting this forum about the teachings of Islam - and how incorporation of its principles in government helped people llive their lives well.
In the present times though, over emphasis on religion in the public sphere/govt appears to have driven a big wedge.
religion is so personal - and when politicians use that to gain power, something has gone wrong.
But to those who practise religion the right way, I respect them - a lot.

Even without religion we would have fought with each other, on the basis of language, ethnicity, race, national ideology. Societies thrive and countries are formed on the basis of ideology, ideology runs the society not rational thought. Ideology can be based on anything, racial character, religious affiliation, linguistic affiliation etc.
When two ideologies are at conflict, war occurs and religion is one of these ideologies. Religion has cross country appeal hence it can unite more number of countries and ethnicity, hence it is used as call to unite though at the beginning of struggle religion might not be an issue at all:)
