Personally, I prefer the regular tie. The thinner ties look quite youthful and can be worn well by some people but I don't think that look suits everyone. Also, I don't know why but the thinner ties don't look quite formal to me, even when worn with super formal attire.

It depends on your suit more than the shirt.
Usually, with a lean body structure u can pull off a fitting suit with narrow lapels etc. And with such a suit, the skinny looks really nice. A fat tie would look dumb.
If you have regular fitting suit, the skinny doesn't look that well.
I heard the basic thing is, the tie should be according to the width of lapels. Wide lapel, fat tie; narrow lapel, skinny tie.
