I’ll start first. When your vehicle registration is up for renewal, can you just apply for personalized/vanity plates and pay for those instead? Does that include a new registration, or do you have to first renew the existing registration and then get personalized license plates separately after registration has been renewed? I personally dont think that you have to wait till tab renewal time to get a vanity plate. you can have your plate change anytime by giving appropriate fee.

I understand that. I just wasn't sure if I'm paying for registration+personalized plates, or just one fee.

you have to pay extra for your vanity plate. the new vanity plate will cost you extra.

Per Illinois DMV website, vanity/personalized plates take up to 45 days to come (depends upon availability of the number/letter combo that you are asking for). Just for the fact that your registration is due within 30 days, you cant have both done at the same time, which means that you have to pay two separate fees (I believe)

What about if you go to the DMV to get the new personalized plates and they give you a temporary one before the customized one will arrive in the mail?

Turns out, I had to renew my existing registration first and then can customize the plates. Will hold off on get the personalized plates for a while. Thanks for all your advise and feedback brothers.
