Re: Registering a domain name
http://ro.cira.ca/re_choose_en has list of all certified registeration companies.
Re: Registering a domain name
I register my domain names at http://www.gpdaddy.com. You might find some other places where you can get domains for cheaper but I don’t think there is any other domain company where your changes into a domain record show up within minutes.
Re: Registering a domain name
http://www.mydomain.com
or
http://registerfly.com
mydomain.com - unlimited subdomains.
registerfly… very quick updates to DNS servers
CB, gpdaddy naya nikla hai kia… waise, godaddy owns gpdaddy, so its all good ![]()
Re: Registering a domain name
domaindirect.com - been using it to manage my 4 domain names for over 5 years now... been pretty satisfied overall.
Re: Registering a domain name
namecheap.com - I have used it every now and then
Re: Registering a domain name
Do most of these host companies support e-business type Web site? If Web site would be for the purpose of setting up shop on-line sort of thing. I suppose they support PHP, SQL databases, ASP? I am not sure what kind of package i should be looking for.
Re: Registering a domain name
I think you are confused between a domain name and a web hosting provider. Domain names are just the links to reach a website eg: www.yahoo.com. Web hosting provide you a place to host the website where you can point your domain name.
Re: Registering a domain name
godaddy rulez.
Re: Registering a domain name
i bought a site from godaddy a long ago..they are the best!
Re: Registering a domain name
The bottom line is, have a full control over your domain names. Keep your domain registry and hosting seperate. Register a domain name yourself with a registrar like namecheap, godaddy, registerfly, etc. Don't let a hosting provider (like yahoo) register a domain for you.
Re: Registering a domain name
Actually Yahoo is doing domains for $4.95 so why not!
Re: Registering a domain name
because you will not have full control over your Domain DNS names. When/if you want to switch your hosting provider from yahoo to something else, you will not be able to able to change it yourself. You will need yahoo’s assistance. consider another scenario. if your website is hacked and you can no longer access it, if you could control your domain’s DNS yourself, then you quickly point your domain to another host and then worry about gaining access back to your hacked hosting space. I have learned it the hard way.
Re: Registering a domain name
Hunh? Its a regular hosting, just like namecheap and the like with nameserver setup and what not. Ur domain got hacked?
Re: Registering a domain name
Alright, so for now i am just planning to register a domain name so it can be reserved. But after few months i might want to start building a site. Would it not be wise to buy it from mydomain.com for example since they also provide Web hosting?
Re: Registering a domain name
If yahoo lets you change your domain’s DNS names to point to a server sitting in your basement (or any other host for that matter) then yes, I am with you.
Two very common mistakes that people make are following:
-
choose a hosting provider and let them register the domain that they will host. In most cases, they will put their own credentials in the registry info. Try a whois on a domain that was registered by a host and you will know what I mean. Most inexpensive and small host companies are not domain registrars anyway. They have to use a registry service from a third party.
-
transfer a domain’s registry when you don’t really need to. This is a big misconception. All you need to do is to point your DNS names to a new host. And if your host registered your domain, then you will have to ask your host to change it. Whether your host is a registrar or not, you will have a hard time having them to change the DNS names on your domain registry (unless of course they give you full control like yahoo as you mentioned)
I didn’t have my website hacked. I had a friend in pakistan who is an IT manager in a small firm. He had his company’s website hosted by readyhosting.com (u.s. based) and they wanted to change their web hosting provider. He asked me for help. The readyhosting used network solutions to register the domain I believe. I couldn’t just logon to network solutions and change the DNS names because the domain was theoretically owned and managed by readyhosting. It took me more than 3 weeks to get them to change the DNS name at network solutions and then update the registry to reflect my friend’s name and logon info so that readyhosting is out of the picture.
Re: Registering a domain name
I had a client who bought a domain name from Yahoo! with web hosting. After a little while he decided that he didn't want Yahoo's hosting anymore and wanted to change DNS. Behold, he couldn't himself and he had to submit a ticket for it and it took 2-3 months for them to make change.
If a webhost say "We will register a domain name for you" it means they will register it on your behalf but they will own it.
Some say "Buy domain names from us" it means you have control over your DNS. Another good idea is you e-mail the company BEFORE you purchase a domain name and ask them about who will be the owner of domain name.
Remember, domain names are most important part for many website and in most cases are trademark for a business. If your web host go bankrupt or goes down. you can always use backup of your site or build a new one from scratch. But if your domain registrar goes bankburpt or goes offline. You will be doomed. That's why I always register domain names from one place and host them somewhere else.
Re: Registering a domain name
I would recommended this site 9cubehositng.com . Here you can register your domain name at low cost. I also registered my domain name from this site. I’ve been using their service for past 8 month. Their customer support and service are very nice. They are offering international service.
