Refined ???

Here is a gem of a thought from Yasmine2 from that Indian vs Pakistani Muslim thread that was overlooked the first time.

I think the insight derserves a few brain cells (no, not mine - I’m helping Sobi these days to prove something to someone by writing least amount of high-spirited, eulogistic material. This will also help her to continue to enjoy her juvenile intrigues and gibes that she thinks grandpas like ChannMahi and Ahmadi haven’t noticed yet and hence is most amusing).

So what is a refined culture? How do you ‘make’ it refined? And why Punjabis and ‘mountain people’ are so ‘unrefined’?

Bear in mind that when you characterize things comparatively, and I say comparatively, the context may be different in usage of words and is acceptable to the extent where a statement is not a declaration.

So we don't know what refinement is in terms of culture? Is it a higher state of learning and sense of aestheticism in various social customs, behaviors, and expressions? Does it have to do with dress, language, food, attitude, art, literature, or all of the above?

Are there any particular norms, that Punjabis and 'mountain people' miss out and are present in some other cultures, that make them disqualified for a certain standard of refinement? If so, what are those standards and how can Punjabis and 'moutain people' achieve them?

My punjabi roommate hates being punjabi b/c <<<

This roommate certainly needs some chhitar parade to make him/her feel better. As a start needs to change the roommate.

Chann"unrefined"Mahi

Chann ji, I know one thing for sure that you can refine your aspired soul by avoid using expressions like 'chittar parade' and 'chitrol'. No wonder Pujabis are total barbarians and unrefind.

Now if you were to replace 'chithrol' with, say, a little pinch on any body part above the belt then you might qualify as being more refined (below the belt will make it only aesthetic).

Yes Chann Ji. He must be from Canayda or Walayt. Only ignorant and self-absorbed people will have you believe that Punjabis and mountain people are not refined. Not counting Johny, I have yet to come across a Punjabi who does not have cultural refinement and pizzazz. If you look at the contributions that Punjabis have made in arts, literature, etc., you will know that there isn’t any other ethnic/racial group in the Indian subcontinent that is more culturally refined than Punjabis.

Whoever this ashamed person is, if I can get my hands on him, only for a few hours, I will refine him like noones business. Johny is a different matter altogether. It is not his lack of refinement, but other aspects of his cultural insensibility that I find bothersome. He feels he is an Angraiz in brown body. Anyway, after your visit with Rom and I, you will know what true Punjabi culture is and let me tell you this: it doesn't get any more refiner than that. Just don't forget to bring your own Kasa (katoura).

Yeh, I think Johny should definitely join us. I hope we can shove some sense and sensibility into him so that next time he would be properly covered wearing dhoti and more refined using his kasa.

Perhaps he can also learn how to flip over dhoti to cover the head in times of rain.
