Reducing Third World Debt
1:11 pm PST, 7 October 2004

The European Union’s aid chief has criticised British plans for reducing Third World debt.

Reuter reports the EU Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Poul Nielson says they would force future generations to pay the price of what he called glory for today’s politicians.

The criticism comes as the British Prime Minister Tony Blair chairs a summit in Ethiopia of the British-sponsored Commission for Africa.

One key British proposal for reducing poverty and debt, is issuing bonds in the capital markets using donor countries’ long-term funding commitments as collateral.

But Commissioner Nielson says working out new policies for Africa should be about solidarity, and not about what he called borrowing from our children.

The EU commissioner’s comments have drawn fire from the anti-poverty campaigner Bob Geldof.

Mr Geldof told a news conference that Mr Nielson shouldn’t have his job if he didn’t want to help.

Are you sure Mr. BUSH introduced this idea to the world? :hoonh: It must be his first right decision(proposal) ever… I think stupid developed countries should let go of the third world countries’ debt, so they don’t have to worry about paying if off. Anyone who cricitize this plan is an a**hl --be it the prime minister or somebody else.

the British-sponsored Commission for Africa <<<what’s this all about?

Phoenixdesi, you seem somewhat confused again :)

Mr Nielsen has not said that the EU has problems with reducing third world debt - what he has said is that Tony The Bliar's plan for Europe to issue debt (issue bonds) to pay of Africa's debt is a bad idea.

Why should Europe borrow money to pay the off the money that Africa originally borrowed? Instead, Europe show show solidarity with Africa and work with African countries to restructure their economies so that reform enables them to pay off their debts.
