With a heavy red saree full of gold kaam, what kind of makeup would look good? Dark smokey eyes with pale lips? Gold eyes and red lips? Any other ideas?

hmmmmmmmm.... well its all upto u ... but i wud suggest Gold eyes and red lips...
I like these two pictures, makeup by Sakib Chishti. Smoky eyes with a reddish lip (depending on your skin tone you could do different shades of red)

The thing is, entire saree is red.. so if I do lipstick in red also, I don't want it to be too much of a clash.

Red is a tricky color...you dont want to be overdone. My suggestion would be to do one of two things:
Either some dramatic eye makeup - smokey, dusted with gold and hints of red. But then your lips would have to be neutral/light.
Or keep your eye makeup minimum - mascara, thin eyeliner and kajal along the waterline - and wear a shade of red that suits you but could also be dramatic.
I wud suggest, keep ur eyes in a natural shade with black eyeliner and black/brown mascara and red lips, colour same as ur sari:)
I wud do a deep coppery/bronze and dark brown on u're eyes.. and wear it with a nice red lipstick ( I know u can pull it off) The eyes can be dramatic, if u cover u're entire eyelid in the copper/bronze and make the inverted "V" either black or dark brown..highlight u're brow-bone with gold dust and u're set!

I am so envious of girls that can pull off red lips, but I understand where you are coming from; you don't want to overdo it either.
Some part of your makeup will benefit from a splash of red though, so perhaps you can do a smoky eye with just a dask of red on the upper lid? Some pretty blush in a rustier tone and then a neutral lip with brown undertones. The only color I would avoid on the lips would be pinks and frosty looking shades.
I love wearing red clothes!

Brown, gold, and/or olive eye shadow.
I'd keep the lips with a tint of red but nothing too flashy.
Or keep the eyes very neutral (maybe just black liner and mascara) and do the full red lip.

i have a REALLY heavy red sari FULL of turqouise and purple embroidery.. whenever i wear it, i either paint my lips RED and go easy on the eyes.. or do heavy eye makeup and just wear tinted lip gloss... depends on the occassion and how dark it will be outside... :D
but i personally like it when i paint the lips red... go for it.. !

what Sahar said, sheyz! especially the bit about the olive... you might want to break away from the red a bit- it can be overwhelming if its too matchy matchy. and instead of doing solid red lips, you can always do a dabbed on, more sheer red. the trick is to play with it until you get the intensity you want.

red on red is overkill, esp if its a bright red. stick to a nude shade on your lips & work up your eyes...but do NOT put on red eyeshadow :)

Shay gold/red saree sounds really dramatic, so i think you should go with something soft and clean maybe something like this picture, above!

Ooh, why don't you go to the makeup counter and mess around with some different shades? They say there is a red for every skin type!

For red lips, i love love love Russian Red by MAC. Totally gorgeous color.
