recruitment agencies

Hi folks, has anyone had experience working with recruiting agencies - in terms of helping you find a job - positive or negative experience??
I had my resume on careerbuilder.com and the only people contacting me were those agencies…now I’m thinking about going with Aerotek…but I don’t know what to expect. I have job right now, but I want to leave … I’ve been feeling stagnant, I’m in the same position that I was in when I started…Anyways, I’m looking for some advice when going through a recruitment agency. From what I understand, ure pretty much a contactor???

Re: recruitment agencies

I have had good and bad experiences with recruiters who found me on monster. my current job mostly came about because a headhunter found me and , another recruiter was trying to get me in his client company and I did not go for it because I preferred this role.

On the other hand there are recruiters who will not even have the decency to follow up. so its your luck of the draw.

now you have to differentiate between types of rcruiters, there are body shops where you are right u are a contractor, your company pays recruiter he keeps his cut pays you your salary, and then there are headhunters who are basically trying to fill positions at a client company, and they get commission for finding the right candidate, thats it. u become an employee of the company.

what field are you in?

Re: recruitment agencies

Hi Mr. Fraudia, I'm in the science/biotech field. I would like to work for a pharm company ... preferably in drug development or research. I was contacted by Aerotek and K-force ... randomly i just picked Aerotek. I guess I have to sign up with and they send me out to clients ...and from there I have "sell my self". Since undergrade (5 years ago) I've been in the same place and haven't gonna on any interviews ...so I'm not very confident about my interviewing abilities!!

Re: recruitment agencies

have you tried approaching any of these companes directly?

but if these gusy can get your foot in the door then thatd good too. just e sure that they are fair to you, because sometimes these guys can be a little dodgy.

Re: recruitment agencies

Well I've been trying for almost 6 months, a lot of companies have online applications or I've sent in resume through email - then these folks (companies) add in a condition saying "do not call us" - so how do you follow up?? I'm really bad at this ... my first job was a summer internship that turned into a full-time posistion!!

Re: recruitment agencies

Fraudz has given sound advice as always... just to add to that,
I've heard good things about Aerotek... don't know about K-Force.

Re: recruitment agencies

Thanks guys, I have an appointment to meet with them this friday - let's see how it goes :)

Re: recruitment agencies

firefly, you are in a good place, u have a jo and are looking. so u have the luxury of time to find the perfect position. I would say network..many ppl only reach out to others when they need something, best bet is to get involved in local chapters of groups in your industry, attend a few conferences, even if it is at your own dime, shake some hands, exchange some cards, keep in touch with people.

inside connections are very important, often they can get you in frnt of the hiring manager rather than jumping through the HR hoops.

look at alumni listings for your uni, I have a cd rom of all myuni alumni their contact info and what companies they are at, I can approach them for advise, help if needed.

lastly, always good to find ppl at target companies and just meet with them to talk industry news, and all, get to know them on a personal level. Let them know you are interested in their company and they will being leads to you.

Re: recruitment agencies

I work for a IT staffing company as a Recruiter. Buzz me whenever you need to find positions. I have had placed people with Java, Mainframe and SAP skills.

Re: recruitment agencies

Thank you Mr. Fraudia, that's actually very good advice but sometimes you get frustrated and just wanna getout ... but u r right I do have the luxury of time and need to be patient so that I can find something that will be a right fit for me...I need to learn how to network, slowly I'm getting there. Honestly, i do work with a wonderful group of people, especially my boss - but I haven't established that comfort level with him where I can go and just talk about frustrations ... but I know they'll give me great recomendations if i asked for it!!

On a side note recently I went to a networking dinner organized by the American Muslim Healthcare professional (I just wanna give a shout out to them) - wonderfully organized event - and it's open to everyone, even students (and not limited to doctors only) ... very new organization...Mashallah it's very nice to see Muslims professional involved in healthcare issues with an islamic perceptive.

thanks again :)

Re: recruitment agencies

firefly as they say when you aretrying to get out of a bad jo, focus not just what you are getting out of but also what you are getting in to. I think u have the right approach.

what happens is people get frustreated with their job and want to get out, then things calm down and they get back in the routine. One has to take stock of the role and what it means short term and long trm for their career and start planning based on that.

Re: recruitment agencies

Thanks again Mr. Fraudia for your wonderful advice - I really appreciate it :)

Re: recruitment agencies

Fraudia, may be you should start charging for so much good advice.
Or may be limit it to, like, 1 hour per week on prime time television.
Or something like that.
Make a few bucks, man! Naikee ki naikee too.
