there are agencies that search on behalf of the empoyers and there are others that serve the job seekers, as well as employers. You have to see which category an agency falls into because if they are retained by the employer, their loyalty is obviously with the employer, those that represent the job seeker have a vested interest in the job seeker getting the job because that is how they will mak etheir commission.
The agencies that represent the job seekr, some go through a process to figure out whether it makes sense for them to represent you. i.e. are u a good investment of their effort. Others charge upfront fees. Now niether of them guarantee a placement but especially for the companies that charge upfront fees u have to check and make sure they have a good track record in your field.
One of the advantages that some search firms offer u is that they know who they key decision makers in any organizxationa re in your field, and they try to get directly to them and bypass the HR, In some cases it works, in others it does not. They help with company specific info to help in interviews, help with creating resumes and cover letters customized for specific jobs and companies.
One of my classmates used Haldane for placement and was all praises, aside from that I have no personal expereince with the company.
just a footnote regarding recruiting agencies and headhunters:
there are plenty of them out there!..use these as tools IN ADDITION TO aggressively seeking employment on your own by contacting companies directly. moreover, BEWARE: some “agencies” will charge YOU, the candidate, fees for using their services!
