I have the outline for creating a website run mainly user generated content. Example being zabihah.com, urbandictionary.com and the likes. This site is not intended to be a discussion forum, but rather a wiki type information resource.
What i want to know is what tools are available out there that can be used to serve this purpose. A 2 minute search online brought up the names WordPress, Joomla CMS, other CMS’s etc. I have salaam dua exposure to Joomla but i don’t mind learning.
Re: Recommendation for creating a user content driven website
As firenze said you could go with MediaWiki directly. But it has a pretty steep learning curve, which could be a good thing if you’re planning to build more sites using it. The security is also not that easy to do with MediaWiki.
I’ve used Joomla and Wordpress and these are pretty straighforward to implement. There is also a few others like Drupal etc. Another good one I’ve used in the past is TikiWiki. Which is a cross between MediaWiki and Joomla. It is a complete CMS and uses Wiki type coding in all the articles etc.
When you say its crowd source, do you want comments on the articles or do you actually want content modification by the masses?
Re: Recommendation for creating a user content driven website
Cheegs… what’s the use context? Enterprise Environment / Public Commons ?
What are the user personas & their respective use cases? Are there any workflow requirements for the CMS?
Generally, I’d say Drupal will give you the most flexibility in designing custom content modules - be it wiki, blog, or forum based… there is a steeeeeep learning curve though so don’t expect it to be implemented right away. Next best bet is probably something like Joomla. Lastly, there’re a few paid enterprise CMS solutions that I can suggest if you need to go that route.
Re: Recommendation for creating a user content driven website
User generated content in form of what? articles? wikis? social?
I’ve used number of less known CMSes, then joomla and then I converted everything (few websites, thousands of articles/posts) to wordpress. I wish I had done it sooner.
