Downton Abbey is excellent drama with humor, many surprises and great storylines. They're showing the second season here now. Another great (rather short) series is 'Lost in Austen' with a great deal of humor and some mystery/s-f in it, a very different take on Austen indeed!
YouTube has some great tv shows available, some are complete. You'll find great comedy classics such as 'Are you being served?'. 'Golden Girls' is still amazing after all these years just to name a few.
Prior to 'Downton Abbey' we enjoyed (that is my daughter and I, my son didn't like them very much) 'Flashforward'. Long before that we had series such as '4400' which is already mentioned and 'Taken', all s-f type tv series and very well done with some original ideas in them.
