Re: Recommend a desi restaurant in Vancouver?

I want to go to Afghan Chopan. Someone take me there, right now :hinna:

today iftari is at 7:57 i think and the time reduces by about 2 mins everyday.
yeah, the border is about 20 mins away from Surrey.

Re: Recommend a desi restaurant in Vancouver?

So to get there, I would have to leave at 5, or 4 given that it’s rush hour at that time :hmmm:

Re: Recommend a desi restaurant in Vancouver?

r u guys in seattle nikisik?

tt01 is xinhua also good? i like xinhua in lhr n always looked for their taste in other chinese rests but never found one. we never stayed for more than a day in Surrey but there's seems to b lots of options there.

Re: Recommend a desi restaurant in Vancouver?

^ i have never heard of xinhua
there are too many options in surrey.

Afghan Chopan is ok but its expensive for the amount of portions they give you...if you want chinese hakka style then i definitely recommend the Green Lettuce restaurant, its in vancouver on Kingsway...it has rave reviews from desis and gorras alike...

Re: Recommend a desi restaurant in Vancouver?

I was in vancouver in 1997 to get my H1 visa renewed. :)

I remember eating at a small restaurant owned and operated by Sikh and Sikh cooks. There was a zabiah halal meat shop next door where this sikh guy got all his meat and chicken from. The food was really nice. Anyone know what I am talking about?

Re: Recommend a desi restaurant in Vancouver?

a sikh buying zabiha halal meat!! i wouldn't buy that. Sikhs don't eat halal meat y would they even bother for others? i feel many indian n sikh resturaunts tell u these things to attract muslim buyers but i don't trust them.

yeah, well I did trust him because the zabiha meat market was literally next door and he showed me the receipts from the day before.

Well, we went to Afghan Chopan and it was mostly delicious. Service was just fine, decor was quite pleasant. OF course, getting there from our hotel on Kingsway took a long time, but nobody was walking and I was doing the driving, so I don't know why anyone was making shor. "Why are we driving all this way when there are hundreds of restaurants everywhere?" My mother had left the choice of restaurant up to me, so I was not very pleased for about all the pressure before we even got there. One is always so susceptible to one's mother's grumpiness...

We started with the dumplings, which were delicious and unlike anything we have in Pakistan or India. Then we had chapli kabab, chopan kabab and chicken tikka, baingan bharta, and palak. The chopan were a bit dry, I have to say. The chapli were fine, the chicken was good, the vegetable dishes very tasty. The hari chutney was excellent.

But the rice was to die for! My mother and I analyzed it and are planning on experimenting to try to come as close as we can to replicate it. More cardamom than I usually use. Cloves. zeera. Probably cinnamon, but not so much that you can actually single it out. Raisins and almonds. I'm assuming it is made with broth/yakhni, not just water. Every grain separate...
Man, it was really good! We took the leftover rice home and had it for breakfast in our hotel room the next morning.

My mother agreed that it was definitely a lovely meal. Once we got there. Thank goodness.
