Recipe : Trifle

Guys , I am being asked for the recipe for this above Trifle I made, so here goes :

-Take either a large, deep bowl or a Large Jelly mould.

  • Boil one cup water , two tablespoons sugar .. then add one packet jelly.. let it cool … and put it in the Jelly mould or the bowl .. cover and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours …

  • 3 hours later , take it out of the fridge and keep aside .

  • Boil one cup milk, add 4-5 tablespoons sugar… in a cup mix 4 tablespoons of vanilla custard powder and mix it into the boiling milk… make sure it reaches a thick consistency.

  • Let it cool , and layer it on top of the jelly and put it back in the fridge for a few more hours …

Meanwhile , in a bowl, add :
2 TBS Butter
4 TBS sugar
and using a hand blender mix it for 30 seconds . Then add :
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 TBS self raising powder
2 TBS chocolate powder
half spoon vanilla essence
1 egg
Less then quarter cup fresh milk.

Blend to a fine paste … preheat oven to 170 Degrees and place this mixture in the oven in a cake tray … let it remain for 35 minutes .. let it cool.

When the custard is stiff , hand crush some cake and make a layer .. on the custard … and then make some more fresh custard .. let it cool and finally make the layer to seal the cake pieces in . and refrigerate .. finally carefully take it out of the mould next day.

Some Valuable tips :

  • Make sure the jelly and the custard are both thick consistency , otherwise they will melt away too quickly for your taste .
  • Make sure you dont pour the custard hot into the mould , it will melt the jelly and if you are pouring it hot on the cake , then the cake will start floating .
  • Make sure you refrigerate the mould for a few hours between every layer .

Re: Recipe : Trifle

cool, thx.

one last q, where do i get the mould from and how does it look?

Re: Recipe : Trifle

Orphy , I think hubby got it from the poundland :cb: … but ASDA or tesco direct might have one … if you dont have a mold … try with a simple bowl …

When you are ready to pull the trifle out of the bowl .. make sure you shake it a little so it leaves the bowl and comes out easily …

Good Luck …

awesome!

I'm so making this!

Re: Recipe : Trifle

BBQ and TJP .. thanks so much …

BBQ , you burnt custard ? … sharam karo :smilestar: its the easiest thing to make after boiled egg :naraz:

you need a good tip on how to make custard? Here is a recipe for your along with tips :

Recipe : Custard

  • Take one cup milk , start boiling it on low heat. Never boil Milk on high heat .. if it sticks zara sa bi , then you are done .. the stink will be felt in the dessert.

  • when it becomes hot and steamy, add two tablespoons sugar and start stirring it . Again if you dont stir it in a balanced manner then sugar might stick to the bottom of the pan .. and that will make the milk burn and stick to the pan too .. so you have to stir , stir , stir … for a minute until the sugar crystals are fully disolved .

  • Now , take half more cup of fresh milk , mix 4 heaped tablespoons of custard powder and mix it in the cup … mix until you cant feel any lumps … if you try to mix mustard in hot or warm milk, it will leave behind lumps … so always mix custard first in a little cold milk and then immediately and slowly start pouring it into the boiling milk.

  • Now all your ingredients are complete , all you have to focus on is stiring .. if you miss even a second , the custard will spoil. So stir carefully and reach all the parts of the pan… stir stir stir … first minute you will notice its still boiling … second minute you will notice its starting to form a thin line when you fill your spoon and drop the custard back in the pot … keep stirring … fire should be on ultra low … and finally you will notice that the custard is becoming soft and spongy kind … and becomes thick … thats when you immediately take it off the heat … coz if you let it remain on heat … the next stage of custard after it thickens is to get burnt :frowning:

So yeah thats your custard  … Good luck …

Re: Recipe : Trifle

Chicken biryani...can u use normal readymade custard too :) like devons ready made custard

Re: Recipe : Trifle

Tabu, you can .. but the taste wont be anywhere close to the real trifle then .. Most people in the UK do not like custard ... When ever i have made it fresh , they have loved it ... so yeah see if you can try fresh custard ...

you can use instant pudding mix. All you do is mix the powder in cold milk…

Re: Recipe : Trifle

So you don't use sponge fingers or fruit in your trifle then CB? Could you use a ready made cake instead of making one?

Might seem a bit of a lazy short cut I suppose, but in my defence I do make custard from scratch always. I use custard powder when making cakes instead.

CB thanks a million for the detailed recipe for custard I'll definitely try it again... Lusi, thats a good tip for daawats etc. when u have a bazillion other things to make!

Re: Recipe : Trifle

hey CB..in the pictures u posted in the other thread...u had a kids platter with lots of yummy stuff in it...could i get the recipies of all of them? :)

Re: Recipe : Trifle

@Brit chick; yes you can use a nice vanilla sponge cake or madiera cake or marble cake for the base ... I do use fruit occasionally ... but I like to layer them on the top. For the particular trifle in the pic , If I had put fruit layering , the cake would have lost its hold .. so I didnt add the fruits :(

@paki Girl , yes my dear , I wrote detailed recipes of them in the other thread .. its called " Recipes : Various Kebabs" .. please look for that thread ..:@:

Re: Recipe : Trifle

If it's not too much to ask, could you take a picture of the mould you use?
