if your wife is friendly with bosses wife - then what are you worried about?
It seemed that you guys had good trust / friendship before... things don't change much if you don't want it to.
Just go and talk openly. If there is a position available then IA you might be re-considered.
In corporate world - it's a REVOLVING door. One leaves, other stays, other leaves, someone else replaces. So it's all about the position being occupied.
