Receiving Sadaqa

Peace everyone!

Is there any reference in Quran or Hadees that defines whether or not it is a sin to receive or benefit from money that qualifies as sadaqa?
The context we are referring to is specifically addressed in this thread: http://www.paklinks.com/gs/relationships/657069-money-female.html where it is explained that the money of the female when spent on those other than herself is considered by Allah to be sadaqa.

Scenario One:

  • Husband is not eligible to receive sadaqa as he is capable of earning and providing for his family on his own.
  • Wife earns money and is asked to contribute to the household expenses.

Scenario Two:

  • Husband is not eligible to receive sadaqa as he is capable of earning and providing for his family on his own.
  • Wife earns money and willingly contributes to the household expenses.

In either of these scenarios, will the husband be held accountable for the funds that his wife earned and they collectively spent on the staple needs of the family (i.e. rent, food, clothing, etc.)

It might be a good idea to begin by defining what sadaqa actually is…

Re: Receiving Sadaqa

If she willingly contributes, then there's no problem with it (husband would not be accountable). However, with the implicit (and in some cases explicit) pressure to provide for their expenses - particularly for contributing beyond necessities for inlaws as well as trying to prevent her from having control over her own money is mostly zulm. In other words, I would not be comfortable asking for money like that. My understanding here is that it's not about the technicality of what sadaqa is or not...just that if she is spending money on her families needs, then it is rewarded as sadaqa, though they may not be eligible to receive sadaqa in its technical sense.

Re: Receiving Sadaqa

Peace Muzna,

It is mentioned in Chapter 9 Verse 60: “Alms are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of Allah; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah, and Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.”

“Sadaqat” is also translated as Zakat Expenditure including Alms.

About giving “Sadaqat / Zakat”, you may refer who is and who is not entitled in the thread: http://www.paklinks.com/gs/religion-and-philosophy/515708-zakat-method-calculation.html.
