I am connected to the internet thru my dial up connection. I want to receive phone calls while im still connected. For that, i have one phone connected to the same line as my dial up cable and i wanna know if i have to change any settings on my computer and just the connection should be fine?

if u r connected from ur computer to internet, u cant receive phone calls, period.
u CAN however get an "online call display" that lets u see whose calling u WHILE u r online.. but if u need to take that call, u have to disconnect the internet and then take the call..
my advice for u would be to get some non-telephone internet IF POSSIBLE..

being able to receive phone calls while on the internet via dial up will be tricky like faizy said.
Its been ages but what I did was the following
in the dial-up settings, use "*70," in front of the dialup number - applies to U.S.A only. This will disable your call waiting feature. Without doing that, the call waiting feature will most likely disconnect your connection. When the call waiting feature is disabled, the caller will recieve busy signal if you don't have a voice mail feature setup on ur phone line.
get a voicemail on ur phone line thru ur local phone carrier. this way, the person calling will not get a busy signal and he will get ur voicemail and you will not miss the call

see, the problem is that i have done it and all that im my home in US but here, at my parent’s house in saudi arabia, im just totally confused what exactly to do. for various reasons, i would have to use dial-up at this house at least and im sure i’ve heard or seen people connected thru dial-up and still having their phones ringing. i just might be wrong. Yes, it was really easy in US but i have no idea what to do in this situation. If what faizy said earlier is true and one cannot receive phone calls while connected to dial up, then what should I do in this situation? go for a software like who’s calling (that’s what i used earlier at my house and it worked really great) Getting another internet connection which is non-telephone is out of question for now at least.

Well normally ppl have two telephone lines. If you have heard ppl's ph ringing while they were on internet, that must be the reason. Why don't google for it, you might come up with something better, or ask your parents to provide you with cable/DSL. You should make them feel guilty for making u stay in Saudia and not giving your needs nuff attention :p

^ err..i think i made it clear that i can't use any other one for various reasons. it's not providing me or costing my parents. i did google and what i found was u can't really use it with dial-up unless u have something installed, hardware or software and when i said that i've seen other people, they had just one phone line...im sure of it because i've talked to them about it but it turns out that they have something extra installed or something...

Galaxy, If you are on a dialup using internet you cannot get anything unless you have call waiting service.
In call Waiting, your internet connection will automatically dis-connect & your phone will start ringing like a normal phone.
Or you can have call forwarding to another number or voicemail-box in case of busy signal.
choice is yours. If I would be you, I would rather put forwarding than to put call waiting.

call forwarding is solid .. it doesnt ‘sense’ the ‘situation’ it has to forward in.. it will just forward EVERYTHING…
and take a look at this site. it will help u to SOME level.. as u wont be needing to disconnect, u will have option to “filter” through..
