Rear-facing vs. forward facing car seats

Hello fellow mommies,

Just a quick question. When did most of you move your baby/toddler from a rear-facing to a forward-facing car seat?

It seems most people I know switch their kiddo into forward facing the instant they hit 20 lb!

The guidelines actually recommend keeping the kid in rear-facing until 35-40 lb and/or 2 years of age, but no one seems to be doing this.

We are having another baby soon and hubby wants to give current rear-facing car seat that my 20 month old uses to the newborn and buy the 20 month old a forward facing seat.

I would rather spend the extra money and get another rear-facing seat and then get a forward-facing one when my daughter hits 35 lb. She is 20 months old and only 20 lb…she is a teeny tiny little girl anyway.

They say it is much safer to keep the kid in rear-facing until they hit 35-40 lb because it protects their head, neck and spine much better in case of an accident.

Re: Rear-facing vs. forward facing car seats

When my girls literally became uncomfortable in them and that was over 20lbs.

Re: Rear-facing vs. forward facing car seats

Mine outgrew it height-wise before weight. We switched him because his legs were bent and pushing against the seat back which looked uncomfortable and seemed unsafe. If your kiddo is petite and fits in there, then I would agree- keep her rear facing as long as you can. And congratulations!! I didn’t know you were gonna be a 2014 mama too! when are you due?

Re: Rear-facing vs. forward facing car seats

Get a convertible car seat for the older one. Keep it rearfacing until the child is ready. Then switch to forward-facing. It has both settings.

Re: Rear-facing vs. forward facing car seats

Thanks SGC. Due Dec 23 InshAllah. I just KNOW it will be born on Christmas or boxing day. Last baby was born on halloween and that wasn’t even my due date! LOL!

Re: Rear-facing vs. forward facing car seats

Thanks. I forgot about the convertible ones. Good idea!

Re: Rear-facing vs. forward facing car seats

My son outgrew it height and weight wise. Like SGC said, it was not comfortable or/and safe, so we ended up getting a convertible one for older kids. Now # 2 is on its way (inshahAllah) so we will just use the baby car seat for #2](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=2) .

PS.Congrats!

^ same here! luckily there’s a five year expiration date on the infant seat so we can continue using it.
