For kindergardeners that are starting to read - is it better to read to them or should you let them read to you.
I always read something to my daughter before she goes to bed and they are pretty vocab intensive books but lately she has been reading some books her at her reading level.
So should I continue reading more complex vocab books for her at bedtime or should I let her read to me?
Which one do you think is more beneficial for their reading comprehension?
Not really an answer to your question..
but what I did with the younger bros is read along with them. I let them start and when they're stuck, help them out and ask them questions about the story, characters, and meanings of words. They picked it up fast that way.
Depends child to child I guess, what works best for your child might not work for other children.
I would say bedtime reading should be more fun and lighthearted experience rather than a learning one.
I read to my daughter at bedtime, but I run my finger along the words and stress on some of the newer or more difficult words, just so she is familiar with them.
What age is your daughter njgal and what type of words does she read fairly easily?
Take turns, you read to her, she reads to you...even if it just a few words. Books with rhyming patterns would be a good start and books with familiar settings.
Doesnt matter what type of text you read as long as long as you read.
You should read to them classic literature like The Wind in the Willows, Peter Pan, Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter, Winnie the Pooh, The Wizard of Oz, Treasure Island, The Secret Garden, The Little prince, etc in unabridged versions of course.
I guess they already read in schools so it's important to read to them as much as you can.
She is 5 and she can read 2 syllable words fairly easily.
wa-ter
noo-dles
mon-key
She like the simpler Dr. Suess books like "foot book", She can also figure out the rhyming ones.
They ones that I would read to her a bit more complex like at a 3-4 grade reading level. But they are too long and hard for HER to read to me.
Yeah I still feel that bedtime you should read to her the more complex ones. That way she finds it fun as well as gets familiar with bigger words. It will definetly improve her vocab and her imagination. And when you come across some 2 syllable words that she could identify with, let her have a go at saying those words. But dont push it too much, bedtime reading should have its own special place.

Ohh I loved the Secret Garden. But I read it together with my daughter who was perhaps 8 or so.
I think it's necessary to do both. Letting your kid read to you gives the two of you the chance to share her/his achievements. But you reading to your child allows your child to hear the pacing and cadence of language and speech.
