Reading Quran without Wudhu

I have a simple question..

What and (if there) is the Sin/Gunaah if one reads the Quran without wudhu…??

and where exactly is it mentioned that one must have ‘wudhu’ to read it??

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

What I understand is that the reason you cant do namaz without wudhu is because you are reciting Quran in it. Other than Quran, rest of namaz is zikr and dua and for that you dont need wudu.

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

^but you might have also heard that........if one is reciting Quran by heart..tehre is no need of wudhu.....(thats what i heard).......and that only if you are reading from a book you need wudhu...

I am interested in finding the 'source' where this is mentioned....

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

No, that is not true. Even if you are reciting from heart, you need wudu.

and yes, I want to see the source too. I can find it too but I dont like to Google fatwas and rulings to make my point. I will have others do it :D

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

You cannot touch Quran without tahara:
Evidence is in Quran:
“Nobody touches it except the purified.”al-Waqi’a 56: 79.
But if you can read it without touching like for example the verses you have memorized that is fine.

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

I know about the reference mirch…but some people say that the ‘purified’ means the ‘angels’…who are guarding ‘Loh-e-Mahfooz’ or something…

Dr.Israr said that (i heard in a lecture)…also the translation by Taqi-Usmani says the same thing…

this is translation of Taqi Usmani..

“”““that is not touched except by the purified ones (the angels)””“”“”

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

That is the only reference from Quran , the interpretation will depend on the thought process of the interpreter.
From sahih ahadees you can find many references to not touching Quran without wudu.

I guess you are aware of those ahadees then too. That is why I am not quoting them.

You can read a thought provoking article with many references here:

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

I am not aware of the hadith..please quote them :D

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

Mirch, could you please post the links from Sahih Hadith which mention wudhu. I ask because i am genuinely curious about this issue and havent been able to find any other quotes than the one from the Quran you have given above.

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

From Sunnah:

عن حکیم بن حزام ان النبی لما بعثہ والیاً الی الیمن قال لا تمس القرآن الا وانت طاھر

(مستدرک حاکم)

Sayydina Hakim Ibn Hizam (RA) narrates that I was deputed as a Wali towards Yemen by the Prophet (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) and he said, "Don't touch the Quraan unless you are Taahir (clean from impurity)." [Mustadrak]

عن عبداللہ بن عمر ان رسول اللہ قال لا یمس القرآن الا طاھر

(رواہ الطبرانی)

Sayydina Abdaullah Ibn Umar (RA) narrates that the Prophet of Allah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) said, 'Don't touch the Qur'aan except in the state of purity.' [Tabarani]

عن عبداللہ بن ابی بکر بن حزم ان فی کتاب الذی کتبہ رسول اللہ لعمرو بن حزم لا یمس القرآن الا طاھر

(موطا امام مالک)

Abdullah Ibn Abi Bakr Ibn Hazm (RA) narrates that the Prophet of Allah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) wrote in a letter to Sayyidina Amr Ibn Hazm (RA) that the Qur'aan should not be touched except in the state of purity. (Muwatta Imam Malik)

The story of Sayyidina Umar (RA) is well known that when he asked for the Quraan, his Sister (RA) insisted for him to purify himself and he then did Wudhu before touching the Quraan. The version from Dar-Qutni is narrated above.

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

Interesting thread. I would like to read more information about 'touching the Holy Qur'an with or without wudu'.

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

Oh i also want to know about it. I was discussing it with a friend this evening.

"Now a days in some girls schools/madras teachers say that girls can recite Quran in their menstruation but they can't touch it directly. If they want to read Quran they should put gloves on their hands or can use some pointer while reading (let it be any pencil, pen or stick instead of touching Quran with her finger)."

Can someone explain it for me and many others who want to know about it?

Re: Reading Quran without Wudhu

I always heard that while menstruating one can always recite Quranverses by heart. Some friends used (and me too) used cd-roms to listen to Quranverses and sometimes read along. It was always said that 'zaban pak hai, agar wuzu nahi hain, zikr zaroor karo or zabani Quran paro'. However, I haven't read many references about this topic. Only some of the ahadith already mentioned here. Interesting topic.
