What about reading the translation, so I actually understand what I’m reading… Versus learning to read Arabic and reading the Quran word for word with out knowing what I’m reading?

One should make every effort to learn Arabic so he/she can understand Quran when reading or during Taraveeh. However if you don’t understand Arabic and do recite Quran on a regular basis in Arabic and wants to know the meanings of it and listens to Translation or Tafseer for that purpose, Allah will reward you the benefits inshaAllah. However it should not be taken in lieu of reading scripture in Arabic, that should be done in any case.
