Parents of the lynched brothers have identified the main culprit of the incident named Ali alias Petar who was arrested from Tala Gang. The parents have identified 29 people responsible for killing of their two sons Mughees and Muneeb.
The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has completed the inquiry of the lynching incident, additional IG and head of JIT, Mushtaq Sukhera told media in a press briefing on Sunday, adding the two-part report shall be submitted to the Supreme Court on Monday.
AUG 29: Unidentified persons on Sunday injured Hafiz Imran, the Dunya News TV reporter who unearthed the video footage of Butt brothers’ lynching in Sialkot on Aug 15. Riding a motorcycle, the assailants pushed Imran towards the wall of a narrow street. Imran was injured and shifted to a hospital where he was treated. He is now safe and out of danger. According to one source, Imran was beaten up by law enforcement officials.
AUG 30: The Accountability Terrorism Court (ATC) Gujranwala handed over today 17 accused in Sialkot brothers’ lynching to the police for seven days physical remand. The remaining six police officials involved in the incident will be presented tomorrow.
**AUG 31: **Former Sialkot DPO Waqar Chauhan has been arrested. The arrested DPO along with six other policemen will be presented before a court tomorrow (Wednesday). Chauhan was under detention while investigation was ongoing. He was formally arrested after completion of the investigation both by the independent Judicial commission and the Joint Investigation Team (JIT). The Supreme Court is expected to start its hearing of the case on September 1.
Ten policemen were found guilty in the initial investigation of the Sialkot incident. Six of them were arrested and four are still at large including Prime accused in the lynching of two Butt brothers, SHO Rana Ilyas. Ilyas managed to evade custody along with one other police officer involved in the brutal killing.
SEP 1: The Sialkot brothers were not robbers, reveals the judicial report submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday. The report has also revealed that doctors tampered with the evidence, Rescue 1122 staff did not rescue the victims, in fact abetted the crime, and the police present at the crime scene facilitated the lynching of the Butt brothers.
The report was prepared by former judge of Lahore High Court, Justice (R) Kazim Ali Malik on the Supreme Court’s direction. Former Sialkot DPO Waqar Chohan along with six other policemen, arrested in connection with the lynching of Butt brothers have been sent to District jail Sialkot for a 7-day judicial remand. The accused were presented before Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) in Gujranwala. Waqar Chauhan was brought from another entry point to evade media as he was not shackled. The court rejected Chohan’s request for B-class in the jail. Accused former SHO Rana Ilyas, five policemen and two 1122 Rescue officials remain at large.
SEP 2: There are unconfirmed reports that the father-in-law of accused DPO Waqar Chohan held a secret meeting with PML-N opposition leader Ch Nisar in Rawalpindi in a bid to save his son-in-law’s life after media broke the story. Advocate General Punjab Khawaja Haris informed the Supreme Court today that names of all the accused have been put on the Exit Control List (ECL). He also said it seemed certain police officials were giving cover to the influential absconding accused – namely SHO Rana Ilyas. New Sialkot DPO Bilal Siddique told the apex court he wanted those police officers for investigation who were not posted in the city before. Supreme Court (SC) expressed dissatisfaction over police performance in connection with the case. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry is hearing the Sialkot lynching case. The hearing was adjourned till Monday September 6.
SEP 3: Sialkot Lynching case accused SHO Rana Ilyas has been arrested. Sialkot DPO Bilal Siddique confirmed the arrest of Rana Ilyas. Sources said that the accused was arrested in an operation conducted between the Iran and Turkey border, hinting at international security assistance. SHO Ilyas had previously managed to evade custody. Ilyas, who fled from the office of the DSP Sialkot, was brought to the office so that he could be produced before a court for a judicial remand.
