Why rote learning is so common in peela school students?
chhat pe tehal tehal ke ek ek sentence rattna takes lot of energy.
Was this always there in desi students or ye sab siyapa Angrezi ka hai?

But what is the reason behind such practice? Can't teacher be innovative enough to save students from this effort?
Re: Ratta Culture
The intention of rote learning specially rhymes that they memorize are more intended to make them speak fluently, so understanding meaning is not that necessary. Then rote is good way of storing knowledge in head. Vedas were transferred from one generation to another through rote learning before Hindus developed script. So it is not as bad as it made out to be :)

what about this one?
Why rote learning (unfortunately) works for Pakistan – The Express Tribune Blog
Re: Ratta Culture
This one is talking about issue:
Education and rote learning - DAWN.COM
Real-life functions make children enthusiastic about study. The Pakistani conventional education system encourages children for rote-learning. If a student of Class X is asked to apply Newton’s first law of motion on a situation he will be unable to do so.
It is not because they have not learned the law but because they have only learnt it by heart. They can only recall its definition but cannot apply it in real-life situations. If you ask the same question to a student of IGCSE/O level, he will instantly explain it with an example.
As the majority of our population cannot afford British or American education, the government should try to improve our conventional education system to enable our children to compete with the world.
Re: Ratta Culture
Memorising is good in a few things such as tables , mathematical formulas , memorizing scriptures etc.
But it isn't applicable to all subjects/topics.
What dawn.com said is true to an extent and it is the teachers'/schools' mistake. Students should be taught to apply what they learnt to real life situations from primary school.
Re: Ratta Culture
-i call it a 'mechanical learning'!.
-raTTaa in, raTTaa out!!
-knowledge gained = 0 ; energy wasted = 100%
i think this has been going on for the last 25 years [that i can remember vividly] and i believe it is due to the fact that teachers shirk their duty [dictate the course material] and kids raTTofy it because they can NOT understand the material.
thank God, i never raTTaa lagaaod because i didn't go to school until grade 10.

Agree that things which are applied practically don't need rote learning and retained for longer time
