Do you pay much attention to Ratings that are for TV shows, movies both English and Desi & other digital content?
If you do, do those seem appropriate for what you consider acceptable content for age/maturity of your child?
And more importantly what about online youtube content? How do you manage that, if at all?
My daughter who is 9+ now likes to go online to watch, mostly PBS, videos. She has started watching some teenagish Disney stuff too. We don’t have cable and so she gets all her content through youtube.
So how do you guys make sure your kids are watching age/culture appropriate stuff or (if your kids are younger now) how do you plan to do it when time comes?
I use my own ratings rather than relying official ones. I don’t really see any consistency in them. And they do not only differ from country to country but even from province to province.
I can still remember when Jurassic Park 1 came out, some provinces in Austria rated it as 12+ whereas in Vienna it was 16+. Do kids in other provinces mature quicker? I don’t think so.
I do pay attention for English movies and T.V shows. I also keep my eyes open and read reviews for content.
For desi content - ratings are a rarity. I usually watch before and then decide whether it’s appropriate first. We** rarely **watch desi anything as a family.
u tube is a pandora’s box. My girls are not allowed to use u tube without my permission or with me present. God knows what is out there. It scares me.
My 8 year old started getting into Disney stuff but I diverted her attention more towards animated older shows like ninjago, dragon warriors etc. My problem is that she might understand the older Disney things, but her sister who is 2 year younger is too young for that stuff. I don’t like shows like victorious. We have cable, but they are only allowed to watch 40 minutes of t.v a day so they choose wisely.
Moving on from PBS type shows to Disney is pure peer pressure. We used to watch Arthur or Martha speaks together but now she says it is not so into it. I noticed that it was a few play dates with a few girls 10+ & all of a sudden her perception of ‘cool’ changed.
If you guys know of ways to filter out youtube content, let me know.
I don’t want to restrict youtube I want to use it to be more educational & there is stuff out there.
Can I ask how/where your kid watches youtube ?
I mean my son watches cartoons on youtube too but we play youtube on our TV. The TV is in our family room which is kind of open to the kitchen so I know what is playing.
Not sure if this is practical for you guys.
Sorry dont know how to filter youtube content but may be try creating a user id and adding favorites ??
She watches on a tablet. It all started with her missing shows on PBS because she was staying late for some extra curricular activities at school & now it has mushroomed into a lot more.
I have microsoft family saftey installed in my kids PC. so I can monitor what they can watch and what not. My daughter who is 8 years old usually watch cbbc and these days she likes “The adventures of Sarah Janes” and the shows like that.
