Was watching a cousin’s wedding film a couple of weekends ago and suddenly began to question:
Is it because they were late to the baraat!

I am offended by the question. What is the purpose of rasam? Have you ever tried it? If you have, you would not ask this question.

Personally,I have come to realize all these “rasm” are useless and crap, all this “lain dain” etc is bad but since it is sooo deeply ingrained in our culture that people try hard to defend such non sense. It is sad since we are also the holders of “muslim” title.

Purpose is to show wealth. 2 Recent weddings in the family. Groom has been gifted several higher end watches; 1 on nikka, 1 by father of the bride on bride and others by siblings of the bride.. his immediate family members too. sisters gold rings, mum bangles and male watches on just barat.
in my family, not even upper class, recent weddings costed about a corore (in pakistan).

haha!! they are not nuungaas and yet they get kappraas also. Although people who expect things from the brides side should be nuungaas.

Its not only that groom gets things, The bride also gets lot of things,gold etc from the groom’s side on the wedding.

Wut about that one where the dessert (kheer) is put on dulhan’s hand and dulha licks it. And then vice versa.

The reason of giving a watch to groom is basically about telling him: "Tera kharab time shuroo ho chuka. Abhi bhi waqt hai nikal ja."

I know the dulhan gets rasam too, but I could never understand the ‘watch’ business.

If he gets an expensive watch, he also gets the expensive milk. “Dudh palai” rasam mein paisy pory ho jaty hain watch ky.

Gold is given to the bride as rasam, many men don’t prefer to wear gold and hence this watch thing came in so as to return the favor. and it has to be sometihng valuable and useful at the same time so i think watch is the best bet.

Actually I just saw the pics of it when my cousin got married last week. So its still very popular. And yea its totally gross. Though some people have upgraded this a lil bit and now use spoons. Either way I just dont see a point.

Given watch to groom is a gift… but giving it to his father and brother is too much…
Punjabi families… bride’s family give gold to groom’s mother…
