Rashid Latif retires from Test

Rashid Latif announces retirement from Test cricket
27 November 2002

Experienced wicketkeeper and former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif today announced his retirement from Test cricket. He hopes however, that he can still command a place in the one-day side.

When contacted, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) could not confirm Latif’s retirement from the longer version of the game. However, Latif personally notified certain members of the media of his decision by email.

Suffering from a neck injury recently, Latif has been in Johannesburg receiving treatment and physiotherapy. Having recovered sufficiently, Latif was given a clean bill of health by the doctors at the PCB.

Latif’s recent replacement, young Kamran Akmal has impressed with both his glovework and batting. Equally comfortable keeping wickets to both spinners and pacemen alike, Akmal has won the appreciation of several pundits.

With Latif’s retirement from Test cricket, it is widely believed that the Pakistan selectors will persist with Akmal in Tests while sticking with Latif in the one-dayers.

The situation however also gives a glimmer of hope to Moin Khan who is playing domestic cricket in Pakistan at the moment.

Latif, who played 34 Tests in his career spanning over ten years led Pakistan on three occasions. A safe, if not flashy keeper, Latif chalked up 102 catches and 10 stumpings from his 34 Tests. A useful lower order batsman, Latif came to Pakistan’s rescue more than once, scoring one hundred and six fifties in reaching 1277 runs at an average of almost 30.

It is also worth remembering that Latif retired from all forms of cricket once in 1995 due to administrative problems with the Pakistan cricket set up but later reconsidered his decision.

its sad for Every fan who has seen him play but yeah Age is a factor which RAshid has to keep in mind!
he did have an excellenet record in tests!
It was expected though! And i think After worldcup he will hang his boots form onedayers too!

A wise decision Indeed and quite a brave one.
this is the time when we can bring and groom in our youngsters :k:

thanx Rashid for everything…
you were a delight to watch in any kind of cricket

:(
Is this official ? We will miss him. He was one of the best keeps we ever had. Specially with gloves he is the only one of his kind and skills. Hope he will still represent Pakistan in Worldcup.

Kamran Akmal should stay as a keeper during South Africa, he has the ability to play aggressive innings like Moin Khan.
Sad but a wise decision by Latif, I still thought he could have played more cricket for atleast 2 or 3 more years.

Latif Ends Test Career

Latif wants to concentrate on one-day cricket

Pakistan wicket-keeper Rashid Latif has announced his retirement from Test cricket.

The 33-year-old says he is “too tired” for the five-day game, but plans to give a more detailed explanation of the reasons behind his decision at a later date.

Latif hopes to hang onto his place in Pakistan’s one-day side in order to play in next year’s World Cup in South Africa.

After that, he plans to remain active in the game by helping youngsters achieve their potential.

“I will concentrate on my cricket academy and produce talent for Pakistan cricket,” he said.

Latif made his debut in England in 1992, but his Test career suffered a hiatus after he made match-fixing claims against teammates following the 1994-95 tour to Zimbabwe.

He later gave evidence against some of his teammates to the Qayyum commission, one of two judicial inquiries conducted into allegations of corruption against Pakistan players.

Salim Malik and Ata-ur-Rehman received life bans as a result of the Qayyum inquiry, and six other players, including current Pakistan captain Waqar Younis, were fined.

Latif skippered the team in three Tests against South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1998, but was then overlooked again until last year.

He recently had to return home from the current tour to Zimbabwe because of a vertebrae problem in his neck.

It was originally thought that it might be a career-ending injury, but doctors in Johannesburg told Latif that treatment would bring about a full recovery.

**Rashid Latif stats

  • Born: 14 October 1968
  • Tests: 34
  • 1,277 runs (avge. 22.72)
  • 102 catches, 10 stumpings
  • ODIs: 140
  • 1,332 runs (avge 19.30)
  • 143 catches, 34 stumpings**

yes right! :k:

Indeed a brave decision and an honest one!

when i heard tht rashid latif is retired... only one thing came in my mind! SIASAT!!! yes! politics! i think.... its only wasim akram who wanna take revenge of every single thing before going OR there is some force behind Rashid Latif who wants him to retire!
BUT
I think that he should play the World Cup cuz they need an experience wicket keeper to play in the world cup. And Young Kamran Akmal havent been tried yet... If he's successful in the South Africa tour... then i think the Kamran Akmal would b the best cuz he can slog and he can play agressively.. he'z young.. and also.. better wicket-keeper!

Shocking news for me, but yes, very much agreed with the views shared by BrokenSky !!!

Waqar And Pybus Want Latif in SA squad](http://www.jang-group.com/thenews/nov2002-daily/28-11-2002/sports/s6.htm)

Rashid Latif may have taken the sudden decision to retire from Test cricket by himself on Wednesday, but the same day the Pakistan captain and coach recommended his name for the team for South Africa tour.

‘The News’ has learnt that skipper Waqar Younis and coach Richard Pybus while sending their recommendations from Harare to the selectors for the five one-dayers and Tests in South Africa included Rashid in both teams. A reliable source said that Pybus, in fact, had confirmed this directly to Rashid while talking to him from Harare.

The selection committee headed by Wasim Bari announces separate squads for the One-dayers and Tests in South Africa on Friday in Karachi. But to complicate matters further a particular lobby is sending out signals that the selectors had decided to drop Rashid from both the One-day and Test squads for the coming tour.

This seems very absurd and hard to digest since Bari himself has admitted in a statement that the selectors have left it to Waqar to decide on the wicketkeeper’s slot. Bari admitted that the selectors were finding it difficult to decide between the three wicketkeepers – Rashid, Kamran Akmal and Moin Khan, but how the selectors arrived at the conclusion that Kamran or Moin can be put in the same league as Rashid on present form is surely a mystery.

In terms of pure cricketing ability and performance, Rashid has been doing a great job for the team in Tests and one-dayers for the last 18 months whereas Moin has not even been fully active on the domestic scene and his fitness for international cricket remains a questionable. Kamran is definintely a talented keeper but his inexperience showed on Wednesday in the third One-day International against Zimbabwe in some missed stumpings.

Sources say Rashid’s decision to announce his retirement from Tests was influenced by the step-motherly treatment given out to him by the selectors and Board in recent days, when they flatly refused to send him back to Zimbabwe for the One-dayers despite his fitness being cleared by the Board’s own medical panel.

The Game Responds:

*Ahh!! It's a beautiful day. Very soon, he will be out of one dayers as well; the return of Moin Khan is inevitable, my friends :) . People, That Is All.*

Moin Khan has performed really well in the World Cups so far, and he should be back for this one!

Bad move by Rashid.
Now PCB will think he is not fit enough to play cricket altogether, ignoring the fact its Test or One Day.

I hope he enjoys retirement.

All the better for Moin Khan! :D

The funny thing is, Rashid on PTV-news today was saying that by retiring he has created a new tradition in Pakistani cricket as Pakistani players do not retire but get kicked out. I think that is a lame statement. He knew his time to get kicked out was coming, so he made this move.

I just hope Moin Khan gets enough shakedown and practice before the Wcup.

Waqar Not Happy with Rashid’s retirement

Pakistan captain Waqar Younis has conveyed his disappointment to his team-mate and senior colleague Rashid Latif on his decision to retire from Test cricket. ‘The News’ has learnt that Waqar called up and spoke to Rashid from Harare where the Pakistan team is playing one-day Internationals.

“Waqar asked Rashid what had prompted him to take such a decision when the team required him to play the Test series in South Africa,” a source stated.

“He asked Rashid if there was anything bothering him and told that he should not worry about his place in the team as he and coach Richard Pybus had a lot of confidence in him and wanted him for the full tour and the World Cup,” the source added.

Rashid, a veteran of 34 Tests and 140 One-day Internationals announced his retirement from Test cricket few days back but has said he would be available for one-dayers. The selectors on Friday retained him in the Pakistan squad for the one-dayers in South Africa. It is learnt that Waqar had a long discussion with Rashid on his future plans and told him that he should have consulted his team-mates before deciding to retire from Test cricket.

“Waqar also assured him that his and coach Richard Pybus had already recommended to the selection committee that they wanted him (Rashid) back in the team for the South Africa tour,” the source stated.

The selectors announced 17 players for the one-dayers in South Africa on Friday which has led to speculations that Rashid was included in the team on the insistence of the team coach as 17th player.

But reliable sources said this was not true and infact the tour selection committee wanted to send back Muhammad Zahid for the one-dayers but he was retained in the team as 17th player on the instructions of the Board who felt he required more exposure before the World Cup

The Game Responds:

*Rashid has always thought of himself as the epitome of greatness; because he knows that he is nothing more than a lame half-talent assclown. I heard that comment too, and it sounded very ridiculous. Asif Iqbal retiring after losing the test series to India was a brave move; this was just an idiotic comment made by one the biggest punkasses in Pakistan Cricket history. People, That Is All.*

Well if Rashid was saying that he is starting a new tradition, he wasnt entirely wrong! Kindly name cricketers who actually retired from Pakistan team in recent years.
One name comes in mind , that being Javed Miandad.

Aaqib, Ramiz, Aamir Sohail,.. all never announced retirement and they were dropped initially! Anyways its not new tradition, its a missing one!
