considering the BD's complaint, they had the right to do it....but they must had shown sportsman spirit (taken in account Rashid's personality as an honest cricketer).....thats not a mature act anyways
[/QUOTE]

Yeah and Latif accusing them of Negative cricket and then insulting them by 'allowing' them to perform is really very mature and shows the sportsman spirit.

Well after all it's a Pakistani who has said that and not an Aussie, S African or English Captain ..... so we shouldn't be bothered too much about what sort of headlines are held high in the media ..... To use the word "accusing" while they really played negtive cricket (but something that's up to them how they play) is totally wrong and misleading Asif ..... And for sure Pak didn't perform up to their potential so the termination of "allowing them to perform" came into play ...... U r talking about sportsmanship ..... keep in mind the words ur semi-god with the bat chose after they won on 1st March ..... was that mature or a gesture of sportsmanship ??? have u heard a Pakistani player talking to the TV right after a Indo-Pak match telling the ppl how often they've beaten India on this and that occasion that much etc. etc. ...... since everyone know Rashid is a honest cricketer and i guess u'll agree that u won't find that many of them now adays in Intl cricket ...... so what's the point about bashing him for something he thought he did the right but the match referee thought the other way ..... Remember the last Trip India made to SA to play a test series ..... The socalled Mike Denness Affair .....

BTW since when it's possible to take the TV-Footage as an evidence for there are two umps on the field and when they don't raise any eyebrow over what u do on the field who r the TV-Commentators to do so ???? Like in the case for Shoaib ..... he got his 2 match ban ...... but some bas***d of Mr. McGrath got away with what was obvious to everyone on and off the field ......

Double standards r in play and dear Asif don't make urself the fount for it

Zero_one Brother,

I am not saying that Rashid is a cheat or dishonest, I am also aware of the racism which goes on and the way some players are let off and others get punished harshly. My post was only in response to someone's comments about sporting spirit.

As far as Sachin's interview after the world cup game goes well you have to read what you your players and your officials (From Akram to Brig Nasir) have been saying all along that Indians are afraid of losing to pakistan and blah blah blah. I dont blame Sachin for that. You should have read the crap talk before the game by your Rawalpindi passenger. I guess anyone in his shoes would have done the same.

Thanks. If your account is true then I'd switch my vote to he cheated. There's no way you "throw" the ball while still rolling and there's no way you don't know you 'picked up' the ball from the ground.

To prevent further damage Rashid should quit on his own.

There was actually a very famous clip of Moin Khan before the sports Khabarnama in Pakistan, where he would throw the ball to a fielder while he was rolling/diving... Its not impossible.

I have to say in sport every player goes through crap - and Rashid Latif is no exception - Should Rashid continue as captain of Pakistan’s cricket team? - I think he should as PCB planned the rebuilding process - after Rashid Latif retired - I think Inzamam or Younis can lead the Pakistan’s side - that’s what i think

The reality is that India is scared of losing to Pakistan. Admit it!

So Pakistan should be scared of losing to India in World Cup?

:topic:

Stick to the topic please.

Ramiz gave a statement after Shoaib got a ban for ball tampering in Srilanka in which he said that it was very unfair that some people can get away with it (referring to McGarth) and other get punished for the same level offense, but they are not challenging the ban as what Shoaib did was damging to Pakistan cricket speically since PCB is trying to introduce a new culture in the team. The question is if we are trying so hard to introduce this so called new culture should we let Rashid continue as the captain of the side since he is convincted of cheating???

A very excellent grammar, my favorite Indian. ;)

Who is Sardar Asif?

The overwhelming majority of guppies believe that Rashid should continue as captain. It still does leave an uneasiness as Rashid did not appeal and by default accepted the decision. IMO if he was going to do that than he could have issued a statement saying that it was an honest mistake and he accepts the match refree's verdict. As it stands he has not really vindicated himself and what LM has said above needs to be considered.

^^ What i think is that PCB has directed him not to issue any statements inthis regard otherwise it will open a whole can of worms once again. IMO we will hear about this from Rashid when he take over the reins once again and undoubtedly press and journalists will ask questions about this!

Now if PCB take Rashid back as the captain for the Southh Africa series than I think its fair to say that they have double standards. PCB did not challenge the ban on Shoaib, as according to them what Shoaib did was damaging to Pakistan cricket and not good for the new culture they are trying to introduce.

Now if they don’t let Rashid appeal against the decision and wont do it themselves either then it basically makes Rashid a convicted cheater. Why would we want to make a person like that the captain of the side. Now wouldn’t effect this new culture PCB is trying to introduce. If PCB sticks to the statement issued back when Shoiab was banned then I think Rashid's captaincy is over, I am not saying his career is over as Shoaib was allowed to come back too after he served his ban. But since Rashid's ban is for 5 matches compared to Shoiab's ban of tow so I think its fair to assume that Rashid's offense is bigger then that of Shoaib.

INTERVIEW-Wasim labels Latif’s five-match ban as harsh

By Abdul Waheed

LAHORE, Pakistan, Sept 15, 2003 (Reuters)

Former Pakistan all rounder Wasim Akram believes the five-match suspension imposed on Pakistan captain Rashid Latif earlier this month was harsh.

Latif was banned for five one-day internationals by ICC match referee Mike Procter after Bangladesh lodged a complaint about a disputed catch during the third day of the third test in Multan on September 5.

“I think what Rashid did was not intentional and the match referee should have taken that into account,” Wasim told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

“He could have been given a reprimand and a suspended sentence, maybe even a heavy fine. But banning him for five one-dayers is a bit harsh.”

Latif, who claimed a catch off Yasir’s Ali’s bowling in the Bangladesh second innings to dismiss Alok Kapali for 22, said he had no intention of appealing against Procter’s decision.

The incident was sparked when match umpires Russell Tiffin and Asoka de Silva ruled the batsman out, but television replays showed Latif had not completed the catch and the ball popped out of his gloves when he fell to the ground.

Wasim, who retired earlier this year after taking 414 test wickets and 502 one-day wickets in a 19-year career, said it was time for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to improve its system of enforcing the players’ code of conduct.

“I don’t think it has anything to do with nationalities,” he said. "But…there is no consistency in the decisions by match referees.

SAME OFFENCE

"They let off one player for one offence and ban another for the same offence.

“The ICC should talk to the players constantly and keep interacting with them to understand how they can improve their system better. Why should a player suffer?”

However Wasim backed the ICC’s elite panel of umpires, saying they were human beings who made honest mistakes that the players would have to accept.

“Their workload is very heavy, and the pressure gets to them. The ICC can look into this thing.”

Wasim returned to Lahore this week after ending his contract prematurely with English county Hampshire due to ill health.

“It was nothing serious, just a sore throat,” he said. "It had nothing to do with my diabetics.

"But I was struggling and had lost interest in the game. So I decided it was time to take a break.

“Although I have not touched a cricket ball or bat since then, I have kept in touch with the game,” he added.

Did Rashid Latif Cheat?

In his article “A pyrrhic victory” Asif Iqbal has been very unkind to Rashid Latif questioning his honesty and integrity.

We all saw what happened when Rashid claimed for the catch in the third Test. Rashid took the catch and tumbled twice before letting go of the ball. He thought that the ball was with him for sufficient time to claim the catch. If he had any intentions of cheating he could have covered the ball with his body, instead he picked up the ball openly for all to see. Assuming he was wrong in his judgement, there were two umpires on the ground. The square leg umpire was directly across and could see all this. In fact he is meant to give decisions of this nature. That he upheld the appeal means he was in agreement with Rashid Latif. If there was any doubt he could have referred the matter to the TV umpire. This was not done and the match referee gave a very harsh punishment.
Coming back to Asif Iqbal (Rizvi) he has criticized Rashid Latif for “starting his speech with a pious ‘Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim’.” He follows it by saying “His predecessor, who started this trend, had been done for ball-tampering. How can you believe in the values of Islam, the world’s greatest religion, if you cannot bring yourself to be honest on a cricket field?” Asif should stop sermonizing on Islam. He also criticizes Inzamam for ‘dedicating the one-day series to Latif’. And his last comment “Pakistani fans must be dreading the final ignominy of seeing Rashid Latif lead Pakistan again - sporting the ‘Proud to be Pakistani’ T-shirt. That would be the icing on the cake.” Now, having said this, a word or two about the conduct of the ‘sermonizer’ himself. He intrigued with the ‘Packer Boyz” to get Mushtaq Mohammad ousted from Captaincy to fulfill his cherished ambition to lead the Pakistan Cricket Team to India, particularly to his place of birth, Hyderabad (Deccan). In the Bangalore test, when he had won the toss, he told Gavaskar the Indian Captain, that he (Gavaskar) had called correctly. The same Indian team which was soundly beaten by Pakistan under captaincy of Mushtaq, thrashed the team of ‘superstars’ led by the ‘master of intrigues’.
Asif Iqbal may have an axe to grind with the PCB for not giving him any appointment, but it does not give him any right to ridicule players who are doing a lot for Pakistan Cricket. If he is so concerned about Pakistan Cricket, he should follow the example of many cricketers and establish coaching clinics rather than venting his frustration and creating mischief.
Rashid Latif maybe sporting the ‘Proud to be Pakistani’ T-shirt. It is definitely better than sporting a ‘Proud to be a Packerite’ T-shirt.

^^ This is exactly i was talking about. When issues come up like this one, people often base thier judgements on personal likes and dislikes. Asif Iqbal, with utmost respect to his incredible cricketing skills, has always been critical to Rashid. He was the one who opposed his selection in the worldcup squad, he again opposed his appointment as captain, etc etc... Its high time, we pakistanis base our judgements regardless of personal prejudices and preferrences.

Agreed with tshombe39 and saby. There was enough element of doubt for Rashid to have claimed the catch, especially on the spur of the moment. I am pretty disappointed that Asif has called his integrity into question especially since his own background with regards to the Sharjah benefit matches isn't exactly crystal clear. To call someone a cheat on the basis of that Rashid catch is not fair IMO.

You should also take into account that he is not a Pakistani so its normal for him. I am sure had it been Indian captain Ganguly (whom I think is more capable of such things ;) ) we Pakistani would have blamed him without even considring the facts.

Anyway I am lil happy cuz I wanted to see someone else as PAK captain and its been a while since PCB have sacked a captain. Plus its good to see Inzi performing with big responsibility on his shoulders. :)
