Rape victim threatens self-immolation

By our correspondent

ISLAMABAD: “I will set myself on fire along with my mother and father in front of the Parliament House if the rapists are not arrested within 48 hours,” Nazish, student of first year and victims of gang-rape in Sialkot threatened while addressing a press conference at the Press Club here on Tuesday.

She said, “I came here to knock at the corridors of powers for justice after denied the same by the Sialkot police bowed to the influential rapists.” She alleged that the District Police Officer (DPO) was openly favouring the rapists.

Nazish, while introducing herself, said she was the first-year student of a girls college in Sialkot. She said that she was kidnapped by some influential people, who kept her hostage for over three weeks and gang rapped her incessantly. She managed to escape from their captivity and straightaway reached the police station, but instead of arresting the rapists, two policemen, Sub Inspector Azam Bhatti along with a constable, confined her in illegal custody and rapped by them for seven days. She demanded a high level inquiry in her case, and threatened to set herself on fire in front of the Parliament House along with his father, Asghar Bhatti and mother, if the rapists were not arrested within 48 hours.

Meanwhile according to APP, Asama Mumtaz Raja, District Police Officer, Sialkot claimed that the accused in Nazish case-Naveed Saeed Khan, Shabana Bibi and Farooq Bhatti-have been arrested and sent to jail, while Mohammad Azam and Mohammad Riaz, two other accused, have got bail before arrest. He rejected the charges levelled agaisnt him by the victim.

uterly disgusting, she has to go through all this to get justice. I just want to go underground sometime and do justice myself speedy one. want to kill all of these *******s! whenever or where ever it may happens.

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

But I thought Sialkot is better managed then other big cities.

What a shame.

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

Whats horrible is that there are hundreds of thousands of people in Paks ho will read that story, say "how terrible" and continue with their lives because they think there is nothing they can do about it.

All it needs is a few thousand people to sit up take notice, and say enough is enough!

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

May she be granted justice and all those animals what they deserve; beheading at the city centre.

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

^ i hope she gets to beat them up before.

i thought sialkot was a relatively safe place in paksitan.

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

Unfortunately, for something to hit these people really hard that htey will acutally get up adn do something is for it to happen to their own family…

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

^ so incredibly true.

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

i think only few major cities are safe cause, any little incendence like this get media coverage,

sialkot is still a small city and all smaller cities are prone to local influence of wealthy criminals/business families who think they can get away with anything.

its just before people didnt project these kind of cases for their own sake, but more and more are getting courage to tell this is a crime, criminals should be ashamed not the victim.

Re: Rape victim threatens self-immolation

I’m so glad that the victims are going public. Screw social stigma. The abusers should be punished. :mad2: These incidents give negative publicity to Pakistan but it seems that it’s the only way to make the government pay attention to the corruption in Pakistan and do something about it.

Top officer probes Pakistan rape

One of Pakistan’s top police officers has been appointed to investigate the case of a woman who threatened to set herself on fire over an alleged rape.
A parliamentary committee appointed the former inspector-general of Balochistan province, Shoaib Suddle, to the case of 17-year-old Nazish Bhatti.

Ms Bhatti said she was raped by a gang of men and then two policemen when she went to complain.

She withdrew her suicide threat after she was assured she would get justice.

Assurances

Parliament’s standing committee on the interior appointed the highly experienced Mr Suddle after hearing details of Ms Bhatti’s allegations.

Such an injustice should not be tolerated and the government must ensure swift punishment to the people involved in this crime against humanity
Onaza Ehasan, MP

Ms Bhatti, a first-year college student, said she was abducted from Sialkot, an industrial city south-east of the capital, last month and held in captivity for several days.

She said she was gang-raped repeatedly by her abductors for three weeks.

Ms Bhatti said she managed to escape and reached a police station to report the crime. But two of the policemen on duty also raped her, she said.

Mr Suddle was given an assurance by the committee that strong action would be taken upon receipt of his report which he would be expected to file next month.

Mr Suddle is now director-general of the National Police Bureau - an agency tasked with suggesting police reforms.

He said he would not comment on the appointment until an official notification was made.

**Tribal rivalries **

Ms Bhatti had come to the capital, Islamabad, to highlight her case, saying she and her parents would set themselves on fire outside the parliament building if her alleged attackers were not brought to justice.

She withdrew the threat on Thursday after the government intervened.

Ms Bhatti says Sialkot police were protecting her rapists because they were “influential men”.

Sialkot police chief, Osama Raja, denied the allegations and said investigations were continuing.

He told local newspapers that three of the five men accused by Ms Bhatti had been arrested while the other two had obtained bail. He denied any policemen were involved.

Hundreds of Pakistani women are raped every year - many because of family or tribal rivalries.

The BBC’s Aamer Ahmed Khan in Karachi says it is rare for the victims to go public -most remain quiet for fear of social stigma.

But recently rape victim, Mukhtar Mai, who was attacked allegedly on the orders of a tribal council, has pursued her case doggedly, winning widespread praise, our correspondent says.
