Last night heard the news that he went into coma yesterday. just now checked BBC to find out that he died of renal problems. One of the great movie comedians, singer, writer, producer…
One of Pakistan’s most popular film comedians, Rangeela, has died in Lahore after a protracted illness. He was 68. A doctor at Lahore’s Sharif Medical City Complex said Rangeela died of renal failure.
Rangeela will be best remembered for his inimitable use of body language and his pliable face which he exploited to the maximum for humorous effect.
He featured in nearly 300 Urdu and Punjabi-language films and also worked as a producer and screenwriter.
‘A colourful character’
Born as Saeed Khan in Peshawar, Rangeela started his career as a paint boy, making small hoardings for film publicity in Lahore.
It was in the early 1960s that he got a chance to appear in a couple of feature films, adopting the pseudonym Rangeela, which literally means “a colourful character”.
By dint of hard work and his natural flair for comic acting, he soon came to be counted among the leading lights of Pakistani cinema.
Later in his career, he produced more than half a dozen feature films. In some of them he took the lead role, wrote the screenplay and also recorded lyrics as a playback singer.
His film Rangeela - supposedly based on his own life - was an instant hit.
He spent much of the last part of his life in and out of hospital being treated for kidney problems.
i was a big fan of mr. rangeela and mr. munawar zareef back home and still am,they for me r betaaj badshah’s of comedy, nothing comes close to their talent. sad loss but he was unwell for quite sometime now, his age caught up to him.

** Rangeela is no more
*** By Shahab Ansari
* LAHORE: Muhammed Saeed Khan or most popularly known as Rangeela, a comedian with a distinctive style in the Pakistani film industry, died on Tuesday afternoon at the Sharif Medical City, Raiwind. He was 74.
He has left behind three widows, six sons and eight daughters, and an acting legacy spanning over four decades. Rangeela was suffering from a kidney ailment. He had been on a regular dialysis for the last few months and went into coma on the night between Monday and Tuesday. He could not regain consciousness. He was buried at Johar Town graveyard at 10.30pm.
Sheer determination coupled with anger at the world which he used as a driving force brought a simple young man from Nangarhar, Afghanistan, first to Peshawar and then to Lahore to become an actor.
Wherever he went, he was taunted by some for his "unique" face. He absorbed it all, but could not take it anymore when the mother of a girl he loved taunted him about his face. This sent Saeed Khan on a journey to become Rangeela, the man who ultimately became one of the giants of the silver screen in Pakistan. His first introduction in the film industry was Daleep Kumar’s movie ‘Jugnoo’ which inspired him. He decided to become an actor.
Saeed Kahn came to Lahore and sought shelter in a mosque at Circular Road, as he was the son of an Imam Masjid. He was taken in. He would call for prayers in the mosque. Despite being a destitute young man without any money and nowhere to go, Saeed Khan’s faith and strong will to "become something" never wavered. He set on a mission with zeal. The Pesh Imam of the mosque where he was staying suggested to him to earn his living by selling copies of the Holy Qur’aan on Hadiya. He did that for some time then Kale Khan, a hoodlum from Peshawar, met him in Lahore. Kale Khan, who lived near Ratan Cinema, took Saeed Khan to a painter at McLeaod Road. This was the start of a new career which lasted for two years. During these years Saeed Khan started his own shop in Shad Bagh area and it fared very well. During this time he found a new interest: Body Building. He participated in a few Dungals, or wrestling competitions, and even defeated some weak wrestlers. But the fate had something else in store for him. One day he was thrown out of the ring by a strong opponent. This was the end of his wrestling career, but this was not the end of the story.
Saeed Khan kept his body building passion alive and in a compaction at Capital cinema he was for the first time shown the way to transform himself into Rangeela. During the competition, people started laughing at him. He got angry and when he complained about the behaviour of the crowd to a friend, he advised him to take up comedy as a profession because he could make people laugh. Saeed Khan gave it a very serious thought and started efforts to get into the film industry. He knew the renowned film director, M J Rana, and asked him to give him a chance in his films.
At this time a new TV system was introduced in the trains in Pakistan and Saeed Khan started working on this. Later, the same system was installed at Minto Park in an industrial exhibition where Saeed would present comic skits. This made him popular and helped him enter the Lollywood where he became ‘Rangeela’ and he never looked back. His first movie was ‘Jutti’ with Mussarrat Nazeer and Sudheer in leading roles. Rangeela worked in over 300 movies and was also awarded the Pride of Performance. He also produced and directed his own movies and sang songs too for his movie. His famous productions include ‘Diya aur Tufan’, ‘Dou Rangeele’, ‘Rangeela’, ‘Sona Chandi’, ‘Duniya’, ‘Raja Rani’ and ‘Kubra Aashiq.’
He also worked with the top heroines of his times including Nishoo Begum, Sangeeta, Aasia, and Chun Chun. He worked with the great comedians like Munawar Zareef, Nunah, Zulfi and others.
The boy, who started his journey from Peshawar to Lahore without a ticket, channelled his anger and used it as a great tool to reach his ultimate destination.
Rangeela had three wives, and perhaps he was the one of the very few who had all their children and wives together in one place. All his children are highly qualified. One of his daughters is a doctor, one is a barrister and yet another is a councillor. His son Salman Saeed appeared in a movie ‘Khubsoorat Shaitan’ in the leading role.
The death of Rangeela has created a void in Pakistani film industry and brought to an end a brilliant chapter of comedy. A large number of people from film industry attended his funeral.
It's sad our movies can only "downgrade" all the awesome available talent and not showcase it in the form it deserves. This was the case with Rangeela too - though he did fab stuff in the films from the 70s!
to see his brilliance as a director, writer and producer, watch his movie [Aurat Raj]. made in the mid 70s, movie is about a pissed-off female scientist, who creates a bomb, which upon explosion, will turn every man into woman and woman into man. it was hilarious. even the gr8 sultan rahi had a role to play in the movie. first 10 mins of the movie are awesome. where rangeela introduces his team, which surprisingly, was full of rangeelas, from the spot-boy to the cameraman. :k: thats one movie i’ll never forget.
He was the house hold name because of his 'unique' name selection and 'comedy style'
I consider him as one of the most spoken about actor of silver screen in Pakistan
Rangeela ,, may Allah grant him peace
I saw one movie of Rangeela a long time back. It was a serious (B&W) movie with a very serious topic. He did a very good and serious role. ( Name, i dont remember but something like ‘Kunwara baap’ maybe : )
I never liked his recent movies nor his acting, but he was good actor nevertheless and people liked and loved him.
Rangeela had been admitted to the Shaikh Zayed Hospital in the last week of November because of aggravated liver and kidney problems. The filmstar also had an enlarged heart and was suffering from pericardial effusion. Doctors extracted a large quantity of water from his lungs and his condition started improving by the end of December.
Rangeela was shifted to the Sharif Medical Complex in the second week of January where his condition started deteriorating on Monday evening. He was laid to rest in the evening.
Rangeela had six sons and eight daughters from three wives. He was mostly looked after by daughter Farah Deeba, a PML councillor from Johar Town.
