A friend of mine is having fraternal twins and she was telling me about possible baby names. She wants to give them names that “complement” each other and chose two names that are rather matchy-matchy (the male and female version of the same name). This raised a question.
I don’t have children yet so I’ve never given the baby name bit much thought but, I was thinking, doesn’t giving twins such similar or matching names take away from their individuality a bit? I mean, as it is, many people have the tendency to treat twins as one “package” and assume that they will behave similarly or have similar likes and dislikes. My husband is an identical twin and he’s mentioned that he always found this tendency quite annoying while growing up. Wouldn’t giving twins matching names make this worse?
What do you guys think? If you have/were having twins did/would you give them similar names?
I have twin boys, and no, they do not have matching/rhyming/complimentary names. They are fraternal, not identical, and don’t look very much alike…very rarely did I dress them identically, we always made sure that they were in separate classes in school and try to encourage that individuality.
I guess it comes down to personal preference, but my husband and I were not into matchy matchy names.
I did something totally cheesy and my twins names mean life and joy. I wanted their names to be complimentary or have different names but the same meaning but the names we liked somehow ended up having a wonderful meaning. They share the same middle name so they stay forever connected. There is a little bit of in me hehe
I know a couple of twins and most of them have the same first letter, not so sure abt the meaning except one pair where the meaning is very complimentary/same meaning
I’m a twinny. The brother and I have matching and similiar meaning names - People always find it a bit amusing . We went to the same school, same class - although we started in two different once but I did so many dramays, that the headmaster finally let me be in the same class as my brother - and later on in what is classified as high school here, we were also in the same line, which meant we had the majority of the subjects together. Nobody expected us to behave similiar but I think that’s probably because we’re a girl and a boy. We’re pole aparts anyway, I’ve a brother who’s an year older than me and I think he and I could easily pass as the twins because we’re much more similiar. We all three grew up as the triplets - it has been completely amazing, I would not want it any other way and I know those two would not want it any other way either.
