Obviously at one day level its a gimme that Rana Naved will play cos hes an excellent one day bowler and he can bat a bit…
But in the test form of the game his performances havent been as impressive…that said his first class record for Sussex has been excellent this year and bearing that in mind should he play instead of Gul in our test team?..

Test cricket is about specialist batsmen, bowlers and keeper, unlike ODI. PAK can accommodate Razaq due to fragile batting (for most of the times), but I don't see Rana coming into equation for test matches.
If Gul improve on his accuracy, and followed his role model (Glen McGrath), and further develop his reverse swinging yorker by learning from Waqar, then he could be a best option for Pakistani three prong (Akhtar-Asif-Gul) attack in most matches, and 4 prong (Akhtar-Asif-Gul-Razzaq) on seaming wickets.
In sub continent, PAK can use Afridi for Razzaq, and for seam friendly pitches, PAK can use Razzaq instead of Afridi.
But this will only work if Pakistan openers and middle order are clicking, otherwise they have to go to depleted attack by playing Akhtar-Asif-Razzaq and Afridi even on seam wickets.

Gul is a far better test bowler than Rana. In tests you need specialists and not too many all rounders. we already play Razzaq in tests so no need for Rana as well.

I thought you rated Rana as a bowler of highest quality. If Rana was such a bowler than surely he would get into your ODI and test squad or did you just rate him as a good ODI bowler?

Rana still gets my vote since his career so far has been on flat tracks in the subcontinent, and he proved himself in helpful conditions in England in the county matches. He has more experience and more pace.

Shabbir was better bowler than both these,but his comeback looks very difficult now.

Totally agree, Shabbir and Asif are close to each others in their class, but Age is on Gul side, and if he work hard and stay on the good side of Woolmer and survive Inzi captaincy then I am sure he will play for PAK for long time.

Shabbir was erratic, him and Asif r completely different....however i do agree Gul will be good in the future, but not yet.
