I’ve seen many students especially here in pakistan fast even though they have an important exam during the month of ramadhan. Whereas on the other hand there are some who miss ramadhan fasts because if they fast they wont be able to concentrate on their exams.I don’t know how it is in the west, but let’s say if you had an important exam in ramadhan would you skip the fasts to concentrate on revision or would you be able to keep the fast and revise at the same time?My husband says that he would keep fasts and revise but I’m confused as I have never been in such situation but to me I believe that if by keeping the fasts you can’t concentrate therefore wont do well then its better to not fast and make up for it later. What do you guys think?
Re: ramadhan vs exams
Btw ramadhan Mubarak people
Re: ramadhan vs exams
**fasting during the month of Ramadhan is obligatory so unless someone is sick or traveling or nursing a baby or is diagnosed with a condition and fasting will aggravate his condition [like diabetes].
having exam does NOT absolve someone from fasting because it's not a shara'ii eligible reason.
people who have exam may study during night and morning hours and sleep during the rest of the day will be acceptable.
my nephew does summer job and works 8-5 and then he volunteers from 5-7 and still fasts. the days are extremely long here [fast starts at 4:45 am and ends at 9:05 pm] but not as hot as it is in the Indian subcontinent...so, *where there is a WILL there is a WAY!* :) so, Help us Allah! :)**
Re: ramadhan vs exams
ramadan or no ramadan, i never study for exams.
a quote from diary of a wimpy kid "if there's one thing I learned from Rodrick, it's to set people's expectations real low so you end up surprising them by practically doing nothing at all".
Re: ramadhan vs exams
I don't see why there is even a second thought about this? Exams are not reason enough to skip fasting. Honestly, if you think of it as an option than it will seem hard to fast but if you know you have to fast regardless you will be able to do anything while fasting without a problem.
Re: ramadhan vs exams
Not fasting because you have to study or give an exam is a pretty poor excuse.
Re: ramadhan vs exams
I never did that but I know a boy same age as mine who skipped fasting during the exams coz her mom told him to.

i dunno about anyone else but I always felt that if I fasted during exams and didnt make that an excuse not to fast that because a rozedaar is taking the exam there will be more barkat and blessings and it therefore fasting shouldnt affect my performance, that said however, everyone is different ....some ppl have the stamina for it some dont...your brian does require glucose to function...and if you're not eating or drinking anything the body can use reserves to feed the brain but at some point that may not be enough...especially if you didnt have a good sehri...
so it is not IMO a poor excuse to use to skip fasting if u have exams going on...but i think as a muslim u shud try your best to have faith in the fact that fasting is an obligation that god has required of us and if He the almighty the all knowing has required something of us it cannot be bad for you under any circumstances (i.e. it cant even be bad for your performance on exams)
in short...if you dont think you can handle it...let no one be your judge... but if i was in your shoes...i would fats because well i believe fasting is required by Allah, therefore, it is good for you in every way and as such it will not have a negative impact on your exams (unless you yourself dont study in which case ur at fault not your roza)
Re: ramadhan vs exams
i had a couple of exams in september a few years ago, and i fasted during my revisions, but for one of my exams that was an oral one, i didn't fast on that day because i get really stressed during oral exams to the point where i might faint and i didn't want to have that sensation of dryness in my mouth while i'm talking. but you should try your best obviously, try not too study at the end of the day before ifthari because you'll be more exhausted and thirsty
Re: ramadhan vs exams
I remember i had exams after Eid and i had to study in Ramadan. I always enjoyed that time of Sehri for studies. If i had exams in Ramadan i would never skip Fasting for exams. just have healty Sehri and you could do anything while in fasting.

yayyy! that's the way to go girl! :)
Re: ramadhan vs exams
we fast because it's Allah's 'hukm' and obligatory on all Muslims! So if we are displeasing Allah in anyway ..how can we expect him to help us during exams either..reward, success, failure, punishment ..it's all Allah's will ...IMO if you fast and prepare for your exam, it would increase the barkat ..as you would be doing two good deeds ..and would help you succeed with flying colours IA :)
i have had almost all of my medical school exams during Ramadan - and I never skipped a fast because of those. Alhamdullilah when I look back on that time ..i think it was the most fun ! staying up till sehri studying, dozing off, watching a little TV ..and obviously having yummy sehri's and iftars :D
Re: ramadhan vs exams
when i was in my final years of college ,we had our exam 3-4 days after ramadan n we used to study right after sehri till a couple hrs before iftar n then slept till iftari ,n it wasnt hard at all.
a year beore that we had our gynae rotations in ramadan n we had to start college at 8 -2 n then from 2:30-7:30 in gynae ward n we barely had time to sleep or lie down n even then ,never skipped rozas.
Re: ramadhan vs exams
Never skipped rozas for exam preps. Its not a reason at all
Re: ramadhan vs exams
Fasting doesn't make studying any harder, you just study right after sehri for a good few solid hours and a few hours after taraweeh :D
It's a crappy excuse and people that do miss fasts to study need to get their priorities straight.
Re: ramadhan vs exams
Pretty p poor excuse for not keeping a roza, I used to revise all hours of the day out of fear of failing. and then I thought maybe if I keep fasting Allah ji will help me get better grades. :( I think it worked.
