We eat normal/regular food. Nothing too heavy, light, healthy and nutritious food.
I have made a few 100 spring rolls for my children. I can't be bothered to make samosa style, too much time wasted, so we have keema, chicken keema, veggie, chicken veggie , potato spring rolls.
There is an interesting (and funny) talk by Kamal el Mekki regarding eating habbits in the month of Ramadan. Now, I don’t agree with everything he says in his sermons, but he is funny and has many valid points. Here is the first part:
Ammi always makes a big deal about iftaars…So naturally thats what I also do in my house too.
It’ll be most likely just me fasting; so one day samosa/chaat stuff; next day dinner; my husband has even agreed to BBQ for me some nights; so most likely a quick salad with bbq chicken
For last 5-6 years we have stopped hosting any Iftari dawats for couple of reasons.
We normally invite people who Mashallah have allah ka dia howa sub kuch and there are more deserving people for that food. So we instead give money to feed poor
Iftar+Dinner dawat is nothing more than another opportunity to sit together and talk about other people behind their back. At times missing Namaz with jamat or taraweeh.
I admit that it was my begum's idea to stop inviting people instead give same money to charity for poor. I resisted for few years but ultimately i did realize that she is right.
For our family, we don't do much preparation other than freezing food for Sehri (like Shami kabab, parathey, couple of bhuna how qeema/salan etc) and for Iftari and Dinner we try mostly to be at Mosque with kids.
I prepare quite a bit for th freezer to have to hand for ramzan purely because I don't want to waste my time duri ramzan doing it and I can concentrate on ibadah and zikhr Allah more. Its the usual kind of things most households prepare, this year I have made chicken veg n cheese spring rolls, shami kebabs, veg cheese stuffed chicken rissoles. Things like pakoras and chaat etc are made on the day.
With aftaar being so late again this year in the UK we won't be hosting any aftaar dawats at home, taravee is also missed when you have guests over. We can catch up on Eid.
