Ramadan Goodies for the Neighbors

Re: Ramadan Goodies for the Neighbors

^^ Hayee Allah na karai.
I've known these people 5 plus years.
We've sent stuff over to each other's.

Re: Ramadan Goodies for the Neighbors

i've known my neighbours for years,

I never. ever send , give my neighbours open package food items etc . Sadly the climate has changed too much. If my neighbours were to send me open dates, open food etc ,I will sadly dispose of it.

It is not a non Muslim/ Muslim issue. It's just the way things are .

I do share with my Muslim friends and neighbours. We make huge daigs of kheer/gajraila, and give to at least 30 households. not a scant cup size serving, but enough for 5-6 people to eat.

We take trays of fruit/ other items to our mosque esp on the days when iftars are not held for people who come for Maghrib and who also open their fasts there.

Re: Ramadan Goodies for the Neighbors

It's probably to late for something like this, but I liked a basket I saw yesterday that a friend sent out...
it had a CD about Ramadan, some nicely packaged chalk...some drawing books etc and some other child friendly items.....all wrapped fancy in a small bucket/ basket. I thought it was a great idea for handing out

Re: Ramadan Goodies for the Neighbors

So this is what I posted on our community/neighborhood internet forum..since this is only our second year in the new house I don’t know a whole lot of neighbors yet so I wanted to put a feel out there first before we just randomly showed up lol..the response was overwhelming!

In our previous house, where we had been for 14 years and knew everyone on the street, I would make a little card listing the items in the platter. I did it really informally before, but this time, since it’s the first in this neighborhood I’m going to go a little bit more elaborate like this: » Neighborly Love | Ramadan Iftar Platters](Neighborly Love | Ramadan Iftar Platters)

“This Thursday, June 18th marks the beginning of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims. From dawn until dusk (roughly 15 hours) for the next 29/30 days, we obstain from all food and drink, in reflection of the bounty and blessings bestowed upon us by God. One of the biggest tenants of this month of fasting is fellowship, and partaking in community Iftars, or feasts with friends, family and neighbors. This year, our family would like to share Ramadan with our neighbors! My boys and I will be making up Ramadan platters, consisting of a sampling of some our favorite things to break fast with, along with the traditional accompaniments like dates and fruit. If you or your family would like to experience Ramadan with us, we’d be delighted to share! Drop me a message with your street address and in the next week or so (I’ll announce the specific day) we will come to your door bearing a platter of goodies! I’m looking forward to putting names to faces and having everyone get to know us as well…Ramadan Kareem from the “?” Family!”

bottles of sherbat/squash, packet of sawiyaan, some pudding mix, honey etc.

Re: Ramadan Goodies for the Neighbors

Giving iftars to neighbors is a part of my child's 30 days of good deeds so we do it almost every year. I also happen to have new neighbors almost every year because we have been moving so much lately. I always bake cookies and bring them to neighbors as getting to know each other so by the time Ramadan rolls around I know them pretty well.

This year I kept it simple by just doing dates, baklava, pakoray and here is my note that went with it.

Dear neighbor,

Our family and all Muslims around the world have started the holy month of Ramadan. Its the ninth month of lunar calendar and Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, for the whole month. This year it started on June 18th and will end on July 17th. As we fast and sacrifice food and drink during the daylight hours, we are reminded of those who are less fortunate than us and are encouraged to be charitable. It is our hope that this Ramadan brings the sense of peace and happiness throughout the world.

We are doing 30 good deeds with kids to help them learn to be more kind, compassionate and giving. We would like to spread some of this Ramadan goodness by sharing our favorite traditional food items from the month of Ramadan. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Dates: An excellent source of fiber and sugar and an Islamic tradition to break fast.
Pakora: A fried snack (fritter) made with gram flour, onions, potatoes and spices. (mild)
Baklava: Sweet pastry made with layers of filo dough filled with chopped nuts and soaked in sugar syrup

Wishing you peace, health, prosperity and a Happy Ramadan.

My son and I went to distribute..everyone was so welcoming, loved the idea and some of them actually gave something to my boy such as crayons/crackers/ juice/ ball. We also got to talk about Islam/Ramadan etc... excellent dawah Alhamdulillah :)
