These recent thoughts of yours have made me think that should insulin be given to diabetics as a result to make them"operate normally" then it follows that just that much insulin, timing and all be given such that it results in a normal person operating as (s)he would whilst fasting.
Not that I am advocating the harder option but thought the idea to have insulin is to maintain a normal life, the physiological idea of fasting is to push that norm to a tighter tolerance. It therefore might be possible to configure the intake such that a tighter tolerance is achieved without making it any more dangerous than a normal fast for a normal person.
