I usually go for only the fards (2 rakahs), but sometimes go for 4 sunnats before, 4 after the fard and then 2 sunnats. Whats the correct number of rakahs for Jummah?
Rakahs for Jummah prayers
4 sunnats
4 farz
2 sunnats
2 nafls
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
^ thats for Zuhr...
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
4 sunnah
2 fardh
4 sunnah
2 sunnah
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
nafl is an individual act so it shouldn't be included in the number of rak'ats to be offered.
4 sunnat
2 fard
2 sunnat
some people offer 4 rak'ats after the Jum'a jamaa'at as 'iHtiyaat uz zohr' but it's not necessary.
it's worth noting that the Khutba is worth 2 rak'ats of the fard to make up the zohr prayer which is 4 rak'ats. therefore, it's important to listen to Khutba quietly and with respect [sitting properly, not engaging in unnecessary changing of postures] ... i've noticed that people walk in late and start offering 4 rak'ats of sunnat DURING the Khutba. it's NOT right. if you are late then offer sunnat away from the congregation and then join the worshipers.
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
Thanks KKF for the clarification as I couldn't make up why some people say 4 sunnah after fard and some go for 2. Considering the importance of the day perhaps it's better to go for the whole lot then.

no, i don't think so. it's NOT better because this is the concession [ne'mat] given by Allah to us and not taking advantage of the benefit [ruKhsat] would amount to kufraan-e-ne'mat as is the case in doing qasr or skipping roza during travel. we should accept Allah's concession that he gave us...we should utilize it.
Kkf is right
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
At the end of the day it boils down to the school of though you follow. Sunnis consider the 4 rakahs as Sunnat moaqaddah and not some nafl…
How many rakat is Jumuah salah?
-
4 raka’aat Sunnah Muakkadah
2 raka’aat Fard
4 raka’aat Sunnah Muakkadah
2 raka’aat Sunnah Ghayr Muakkadah
(2 raka’aat Nafl) -
كان يصلي قبل الجمعة أربعا وبعدها أربعا
“Ali (radiyallaahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform four rakaats salaah before the jummah salaah and after the jummah salaah” (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 13, Idaratul Al-Quran)
The chain of narrators in the above narration is good. (Tarhut Al-Tathreeb, vol 3, pg 36, Ilmiyya)
كان رسول الله يركع قبل الجمعة أربعا وبعدها أربعا
“Ibn Abbas (radiyallaahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform four rakaats of salaah before and after the jummah salaah” (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 13, Idaratul Al-Quran)
The above hadith with the chain of narrators that appear in Tabrani is good. (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 13, Idaratul Al-Quran)
عن أبي عبد الرحمن السلمي قال : كان عبد الله يأمرنا أن نصلي قبل الجمعة أربعا ، وبعدها أربعا
Abu Abdir Rahman Al-Sulami reports: “Abdullah (bin Mas’ood) used to command us to perform four rakaats salaah before jummah and after the jummah salaah” (Musannaf Abdir Al-Razaaq, vol 3, pg 247, Idaratul Quran)
The chain of narrators in the above Hadith is authentic. (Athaar Al-Sunan, pg 303, Imdaadiyya)
عن عبد الله قال كان يصلي قبل الجمعة أربعا
“Abdullah (bin Mas’ood) reports that Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform four rakaats before the jummah salaah” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shayba, vol 4, pg 114, Al-Majlis al-Ilmi)
عن صافية ، قالت : رأيت صفية بنت حيي رضي الله عنها ، صلت أربع ركعات قبل خروج الإمام للجمعة ، ثم صلت الجمعة مع الإمام ركعتين .
Saafiyah (radiyallaahu anha) reports: “I saw Safiyyah Binti Huyay (radiyallaahu anha) performing four rakaats of salaah before the Imaam came out for jummah, then she performed two rakaats of jummah salaat with the Imaam” (Nasbur Al-Raayah, vol 2, pg 207, Makkiyya)
عن إبراهيم قال كانوا يصلون قبلها أربعا.
“Ibrahim (Al-Nakh’ee) reports that the Sahaba used to perform four rakaats of salaah before the jummah salaah” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, vol 4, pg 114, Al-Majlis al-Ilmi)
- Abdullah Bin Mas’ood used to command the people to perform four rakaats of salaah before the jummah salaah as understood from the above Ahadith. This is an indication that Abdullah Bin Mas’ood used to consider these four rakaats as Sunnat Muakkadah. In fact the Muhaditheen classify the Athar of Ibn Mas’ood as “Marfoo’ Hukman”. (I’laaus Al-Sunan, vol 7, pg 12, Idaratul Quran)

Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
AsSalaamo Alaikum,
It is as brother Ali_Syed has said; it depends on which understanding a person follows. Some offer 2 rakah individually before Khutbah (which I suppose is understood to be Tahayyatul-Masjid), then Khutbah, then 2 Rakah Fard in congregation, and then 2 or 4 rakah sunnah individually.
From a source: 4 if prayed in Masjid, 2 if prayed at home.
[quote]
With regard to the prayer after Jumu’ah, Ibn al-Qayyim said in *al-Zaad* (1/440):
When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had prayed Jumu’ah, he would enter his house and pray two Rak’ahs of Sunnah, and he commanded those who had prayed it to pray four rak’ahs afterwards. Our shaykh, Abu’l-‘Abbaas Ibn Taymiyah said: if he prayed in the mosque, he would pray four, and if he prayed at home, he would pray two. I say: this is what is indicated by many ahaadeeth. Abu Dawood reported in his *Sunan* (1130) from Ibn ‘Umar that when he prayed in the mosque, he prayed four and when he prayed at home, he prayed two.

What helps me understand the difference is the fact that each of the scholars whether Imam Ahmed, Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Maalik, or Imam Shafi'i understood something one way or another was based on what was available to them. Which is why each of them stated that if you find a hadith that dictates otherwise, then follow the hadith (as long as it's an authentic Hadith). May Allah guide us all, and keep us safe from the fitnah of Shaytaan and Dajjal.
Allah knows best.
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
Other prayers are pretty straight forward but it becomes very confusing to see different people praying Jummah in different ways. It seems to be how different schools of thought have interpreted it, I am sure everyone would have the references to back how they pray.
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
I read it somewhere please do not ask for reference as its long time ago during British RAJ, Ulma of Hind agreed that the under the British RAJ Hind is no longer Dar-al-Iman and its now doubtful to conduct Juma prayer. Therefore the people of Hind were asked to pray additional 4 Rakahs after the Juma salah as compensation for ZOhar prayer.
Re: Rakahs for Jummah prayers
^ haven't heard anything like that. However there are ahadeeth that the prophet (SAW) himself prayed 4 sunnats before and after jumma and that's what most Sunnis follow.
