I’ve been doing a bit of research into traditional textiles lately and I’ve come across a textile that I find interesting but have not been able to find much information other than learning that it is originally from Rajasthan.
Does anyone know what this type of tie dye-esque type of print/fabric is called? Any information would be appreciated.
This is called “bandhni” or “chundri”. It’s a type of tye dye technique that is also popular in Gujarat, India, and the Kutchi community. It can be done on pure silk or cotton.
In Pakistan, it’s a very popular choice for mehndi & mayoun dresses.
My gujju friends in college once told me that in India, certain colors are used to signify things like red bandhani is for brides obviously etc.
In Pakistan that’s known as chunri, or tie-and-dye. Like khatti said it’s very popular for mehndi, but it’s not restricted to it. Usually the dupattas are left as it is, like this http://www.dostpakistan.pk/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/chunri-shafoon-casual.jpg but for shirts the cloth is ironed post dyeing and drying in order to get a better cut.
Interestingly, the I first saw of this type of print was at an Indian wedding. The bride’s saree was in this fabric and quite pretty. It was similar to the third image I posted but more ornate. I thought it was pretty and different from the traditional solid red and gold colours.
