Has anybody here ever been faced with a proffessor or teacher who was racist? I mean if you’re majoring in math or something- it’s hard for them to give you low marks etc.However lets say you’re taking journalism or the arts, how do you prove that he’s being a racismt.Especially when you know you’re a good student- yet no matter how hard you try you cant seem to get good marks.

Yes, I have seen racist professors all of my life here in the States. Most colleges and universities are very conservative and not only is their rampant rasim in the faculty, many are also anti-women who make life hard for female students. Those men, and some women professors too, have tenure and cannot be fired, so they can insult whom they please to do so. They can give you any grade they wish to no matter if you got it all 100% correct! A professor told an older women and myself to get out of his class and if we stayed, he’d flunk us both no matter what our grades and he got away with it too! The only class I got an “F” in! They do not even have to be racist to give you a bad grade, they can just be mean and evil. PEACE Sarge Booker
In most colleges you can have the exam/test reviewed where they will give you the marked paper to look and make sure that you were cheated out of scores. Sometimes this is easy where they give the paper to the student and at other times its harder where either the professor or some other person will review the scoring. Considering that you are in NA I would say its highly unlikely that someone is very specifically targetting you, simply because each question has an associated score with it (which is known before the test was taken) and the professor cant just take away points (he may be more stricter but in most schools the Questions and grading sheets are made before the test administered to prevent such issues).
I would suggest you talk to him personally and ask him how you could have improved your score, where you went wrong and what else you need to do to get better scores in the future exams.
I've had an Xperience, a very bad Xperience wid a racist professor too. I never knew how 2 get out of da situation, but I alwayz wanted 2 kill da damn son of a *****. I still do wan2 spread da color of hatred all over his ugly face.......!
I have run into 2 racist profs. the complaints against one were getting so bad that I was asked to be involved in a group set up by the univ president to investigate the accusations. This prof was on course to become the dean of the business school, while the search was on for a new dean he was the acting dean. I am glad to say that as a result of what we had done, he was removed from his position, and a new dean brought in.
another was my undergrad econ professor, who was a real pain. I can never forget his words. I had asked him some question about how some economic principles apply in real market situations and he thought i was taunting him.. his words to me were
"this would work very well in sophisticated economic environment like the US with multiple variables effecting the economic environment, versus in cases like maybe your country where the basic mode of exchange is camels and milk" ... the class was shocked, i got up and walked out.. he asked ina mocking tone "are you walkign out of my class" and i just responded
the class had no attendance requirements so I stopped going, but would get notes from one of my fraternity bros and keep up with class. Then this jackass calls teh international education office and tells the director that he will drop me from the class which will drop me at 10 credit hours and thus not full time and that i should be reported to the INS since i will not be fulltime.
The director called me and asked me what was up, first they wanted me to just kinda back off and show up in his class, then the dean got involved and he was mad, he asked me what i wanted to do and I just said I want to finish this class. so he suggested that i sit in a diff class and kep up with notes and take this prof's final. That is what i did..
then finals came..I show up to class sit and wait for exam to begin, as he passed the papers, he sneered at me and said.."are you sure you belong in this class" , io laughed and respnded in a very mockign manner "yes, are you sure you belong in this class" the students were gasping and laughing. I got up, walked out, he yelled back..you walk out of the finala nd you get an F. I said, we will see about that. walked straight to the college dean's office and told him the deal. he told me to wait, went up to the class, got an exam from the prof brought ti back and had me take teh final there, told me that he would have someone else grade it.
reminds me, lemme call Art and remind him of the ass kicking he got from me.
Fraudz I know exactly how you must have felt.I mean I swear I get so angry at times...just want to kill that guy.My marks were always good, in all my courses. After I started taking his lectures- Iv had nothing but bad luck. Iv tried studying harder- and he keeps saying maybe I need to 'find a different method of studying'.
At one point we were discussing something -and he made a bad remark concerning Muslims.I said ,"Sir what you said has nothing to do with Islam." Before I could get any further, he got all red in the face and accused me of interrupting the class.Like you- I just got up and walked out.
I need to finish this class with him- but I just hate his very guts.I mean I need good marks, and with him I doubt if I have a chance.Iv asked around, and all my other desi friends agree that he will do everything to make the desi students miserable.
I just cant wait to finish.
hmcq I have talked to him personally.Believe it or not, he thinks Im not good enough for the class.Lol.He's lucky I didnt slap him across his face.See we dont know if he's giving the proper marks or not.And its not just that- even if you do question him after lectures or something- theres no use.He never bothers explaining anything anyway.

Its awful haina? I mean at times I just want to quit the darn course, but I cant.And it makes me sick that they this proff should make my life miserable.
hhbooker2 He's not doing it to just females.Its basically all the Muslim and desi students.
Yes I faced it since elementary school, but only with a few teachers/professors.
I was never much concerned with grades so didnt do anything, but I would suggest you talk to the Dean about it, but dont bring up the race issue unless necessary.

i believe most professors are nice people. education opens up a person's mind. in most cases.
u should go and talk to the prof and just say how u r feeling MQ. dont accuse him. tell him this is how u felt and is it true and if so why? tell him muslims/desis r not bad ppl. maybe that will break the ice. i mean it.

just read the entire thread. hmmm. if there seems to be no respite, drop the class if he’s gona give u a bad grade.
and if u need to take the class, talk to the dean. and tell him u r not going to take the class with this professor and to give u another class instead of this to fulfil the requirement or bar the prof from having a say in ur grade. just disgusts me to think a professor, someone who imparts EDUCATION, a follower of such a noble profession, can be so low

if your uini has a students ombudsman, approach that office, otherwise the dean's office. Beleive it or not student complaints agsinst even tenured professors matter. They may not get fired but they can get disciplined, they could be pushed back in promotions etc etc.
But do not take it wityhout doing anythign about it, either just drop his class, or complain..he is not going to be able to do anything. In situations like these his grading etc would be looked at to see whether he is being a moron.

Fraudiya I have similar experiences with Economics professors. Most full-time professors in my univ have a very nasty attitude towards students and thanks to them I haven’t been able to take this econ course for 2 semesters. 
I can’t figure out how I can stay with someone who is so rude to his students. I mean, they literally yell and treat students like animals! Not to forget their testing and grading policy. 
I want to make a complaint about them but I dont think I can coz I didn’t stay in their classes n dropped out on the first day. And another reason is I’m a business major so I don’t want any enemies… I don’t know what to do! 
MQ I would say what Fraudia has metioned about taking it to someone else is appropriate. In grad school one of the profs was rather sarcastic and sometimes a bit unappropriate (non-pc) to people in class. At the end of the semester though we could not get the professor changed, the issue did go up to the dean. And even though he was tenured, he eventually left after a year and half after that incident.
cattie gracias.. i just did not want him to get away with it, and with that many witnesses around, he could not have done anything to me anyways.
CA- hmcq has brought up what I said earlier, tenured profs may not be just let go, but their career path kinda gets clogged due to student complaints and all.
Now the one thing that i was wondering about was your statement that most of your full time faculty has bad attitudes. I dont know if your uni just has a bad approach to teaching or what, because even though i met a few ppl i did not like, and some who were just morons, an overwhelming majority of my profs was of great people.
CA worse comes to worse, take the copurse in another uni and transfer it in. I know some pplin my undergrad hated accounting, and took those classes somewhere else because it was easier and just transferred them over.
hmmm…good point, I’ll see what I can do…I might just end up discussing this issue with student gov’t association’s president…
That was a typo! I meant most fulltime Econ Profs…I haven’t had any probs with other professors..My univ is known for its Computer Science, Business, and Education degrees…By the way, I’m not the only one who doesn’t like econ profs…I have never heard someone talk in favor of them…this is the only department that has a bad reputation in our univ and I don’t understand why univ is not taking any action against them…no one really pays attention to teacher’s evaluation sheets that students fill out every semester…it sucks!

heh... coincidentally, Economics professors tend to be the only ones that I've personally heard ppl complaining about.
In my M.B.A. we got our Economics prof. kicked out of teaching that particular course cuz he was just too lame... he used to come in and talk about his cat OR his answer to every problem was dy/dx that! :) it took the dept. about three years to realize that he needed to be switched back to undergrad teaching.
My brother has an economics prof. for his undergrad 2nd and 3rd year courses who thinks that after writing a couple of texts, he's the authority and can do anything and everything... he called off a three hour class lecture after someone's cell phone rang in class!! I mean c'mon!
heh... this may be a gross generalization, but interesting nevertheless.
As far as tenure goes, its true that people who're aiming for tenure generally work harder (like me... hehe... :) ) but even after tenure, your class evaluations matter a lot ! unless you're a highly reknowned individual and an authority in your subject area... then your uni just keeps you as a status symbol.
its interesting that econ profs seem to be a common thread here. wonder why.

Im almost done with his lectures ,and hope Insha-Allah I get out of his class soon.The thing is he's also the head of the science faculty- which puts me in a fix.Everybody seems to like him (the other faculty members I mean)- and students have already complained, but I think it's because they're short of science heads.
He just has such a sarcastic way of saying things.Even when you do ask him questions- ageh sai ulta jawab detah hai.Im just going to be very happy to finish.However the marks he gave can't exactly help.

Its really sick .Irem the thing is I know my work is good enough.Which makes me really mad- when he doesnt think so.I think he didnt want any desi students in his class to starts with.What can I see- we cant exactly do much without getting proof- which is hard to do when the proff is also head of a department.
hmcq Yes ,Fraudz is right.The only thing is its kind of strange when he's so well liked by the rest of the proffs.He knows his stuff really well- and I think the department really needs him.I just wish he would grow up.
u know what's terrible about this whole thing? Education is supposed to be the balm that cures all bigotry. And professors are the ones educating. This is like the fence stealing what's inside.
