Racism at uni!

I’ve never been a victim of racial abuse! Today was the first time I experienced it and it hurt! It’s 2 white guys in my class, they where like

“I don’t under stand how one would want be a muslim”
“If your born here in Denmark you can be anything you want, why muslim?”
“Your prophet was a pedophile”
“I thought muslims where not allowed to wear make up … are you gonna get killed now”

etc etc

and the 2nd time they started saying stuff like that I told them that I didn’t wanna to hear any of their BS and I didn’t find their comments funny and that they needed to stop!

They also said they where appalled by the idea of muslims … and FYI I was a good class mate and friend, until I told them I was muslim ← their words not mine .. I dont get it, I’m still the same person …

Anywho, to show them that you can’t put me down, and your opinion does not matter I put on a floral niqaab and posted the head shot onto FB and wrote “My life, My choice” That shut them up, and also the quote “Racism is man’s gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason.” I guess I need more ideas to show them that I am proud of what and who I am!

Re: Racism at uni!

why do you need to show them??

Re: Racism at uni!

Because otherwise they "win", they think its the worst thing in the world to be a Muslim.

I know that sounds petty and child-ish!

Re: Racism at uni!

I didn't know religion was a race

Re: Racism at uni!

she probably means islamophobic.

Re: Racism at uni!

still I don't know why you would have to prove yourself?
its none of their business what you believe in
and its none of your business what their opinions are

to change it is selfish.
why do you care if they say such things?
when they do not believe nor do they care.
and obviously they weren't really good friends if they judged you for what you believe in.

Re: Racism at uni!

It is not Islamofobia or racism.
They are either ignorant folks and you need to show them the good side of Islam and Muslim or they know everything and are bigots and need to be shown their bigoted face.
Now since you know them it is up to you to decide which ones or those folks.
Only negative comments from someone does not automatically make them islamophobic ,bigots or racists.

Re: Racism at uni!

then what does??

Re: Racism at uni!

true that.

it happens to me all the time. be it mormons or self claimed prophets of islam
i am usually harsher on mormons as they are just teenagers.
but there was this time when a palestinian guy wanted me to convert and would bug me every day.
it was all fine untill he started abusing my religion. after that i gave him peace of my mid and turned the tables on him. that guy havent talked to me since.
try to ignore them, it happens with most of us.

Re: Racism at uni!

Short answer . It is the intention and background of a person who is passing those negative comments. Since I do not know those folks on OP knows then she can decide if she need to better educate those folks or deal with them sternly or ignore.

There is a long version of this answer if you are interested please let me know.

Re: Racism at uni!

i get it… please don’t the long version…there are too many of those to go around already…thanks :hehe:

Re: Racism at uni!

 Thanks for your understanding. I did not feel like typing that long answer. Going forward I will ask the members if they want a short answer or long version of same one.

Re: Racism at uni!

This is one of the questions they asked.... so why not give them an answer?

Show them why Islam is one of the fastest growing religions?

Why not show them, if it is believed that women are oppressed by Islam, why more and more educated, middle and high class women are converting to Islam?

Why not educate the uneducated?...

Re: Racism at uni!

I was walking from the masjid recently and came across a white man saying some similar stuff to a hijaban women. Luckily tho, some Muslim guys (who also happened to be white converts from the masjid) were walking by and started hotting up the man. The situation got pretty heated up but once the man calmed down they started throwing questions at him that he never even had the answers to for example: "why is a women in a hijab seen as a negative thing if shes hiding her modestly? why do u not react in a similar way to ladies who show all their skin?" (and he pointed a lady out in the crowd who was showing most of her skin). The conversation lasted a good while but the Muslim guys put the gora in his place. The gora even went up to the hijaban and apologised. Maybe you should do something similar? Challenge their views? Do you not have a Muslim committee at uni which could organise some kind of meeting or event? If thats not an option then u should definitely complain to the course tutor.

Re: Racism at uni!

I would like to see that . Please show me. What kind of evidence you have to prove that. I can use that evidence too. I failed to find any credible evidence to this claim. I will appreciate your help.
Thanks

Re: Racism at uni!

at times challenging views can lead to a frustrating, heated debate with nothing banging on the thick heads of some people who have this drilled into their minds that Muslims are BAD.

To the OP, best would be to ignore them and move on with head held high. Don't get upset. I know if I were in your position I would get really hurt if ppl just started judging me negatively just because I am a Muslim (when am so proud of being one). But some jerks won't ever learn.

Re: Racism at uni!

You know.. hmmmm
You are lucky one who is exposed to such a thing.
I tell you now, at the end you will have impact on the people who are watching you and criticizing the religion.

That's the good part.

Bad part is you have to go through great pain. There are things people can talk about.
For your own peace of mind those things are part of God's design.

Re: Racism at uni!

Be strong and be the best at what you do :hugz:

Re: Racism at uni!

When someone says stuff against my religion, I often find my faith increasing even more, Alhamdullilah.

It depends on the circumstances, and the type of people you are talking to. Sometimes I tend to ignore those people, other times I give them a gentle response - afterall we represent our religion, and we better represent it in a good light.

Remember that story of the old woman walking with Prophet Muhammed (SAW)? If our Beloved Prophet (SAW) retalliated, do you think the woman would have accepted Islam? No, she wouldn't have. So, we need to think carefully in such situations.

If it carries on, stay calm and if necessary then talk to someone senior.

Good luck!

Re: Racism at uni!

There are a number of neutral sources on the internet that support the above, it just takes ages to weed out the *biased *sites and find the more reliable ones..
